When he goes on a drunken bender after failing to have an arsonist he arrested convicted, no one believes Jim's claims of having been forced to drink and having witnessed a murder. Full recap: After trying to get an arsonist he knows is guilty convicted on court, and failing, Jim returns to his car to find an Irish woman named Irene Maybank waiting for him, claiming she is an alcoholic and that her husband is trying to kill her. So Bergerac goes along to the woman's flat to help her out. When he gets there, Irene says she can see her husband outside, so Bergerac goes down to check it out only to hear screams coming from her flat above. When he gets back to the flat, he finds her dead and looks around the flat only to be knocked out by the intruder. Later Charlie Hungerford sees Jim staggering around drunk in the hotel bar, and phones to get get somebody to come down and get him. Jim is taken from Jersey to spend Christmas on the Costa Del Sol, where two petty British thugs have been trying to get involved in Charlie's latest business venture. When Jim gets involved, he finds himself in the middle of a local gang war while in Jersey, a group of French thieves wreak havoc and Susan's life is in danger.
Whilst playing golf, Charlie (who else?) finds the body of Graham Hawkesworth buries in a bunker. Investigations show that he was apparently having an affair with an unknown woman. This ‘other woman' is the prime suspect in Hawkesworth's murder and it appears that she is none other than Susan. It transpires that Graham invented the story that he was having an affair and chose Susan as the ‘other woman' in order to make his wife jealous. His wife is the real killer and plans to make Susan the next victim.
David Mason murders Ted Grob by throwing him into a swimming pool, handcuffed to a patio recliner. Jim returns to duty to solve the murder and is asked by an ex-con who believes he was framed to go back over the details of the robbery of a courier company some years earlier which has a connection with the recent death.
A team of archaeology students are carrying out an excavation on a piece of land reputed to be cursed. Soon one student is attacked by an unseen force and one later turns up dead. Charlie owns the land and suddenly falls ill when the students start to excavate the land. Bergerac refuses to believe that a Viking's curse is at work and works with the expedition leader to find the truth. However in a rather confusing climax as she and Bergerac finally complete the excavation only to be attacked by the same unseen force. Bergerac later awakes where a rational explanation is given for what occurred by a recovered Charlie.
Jim is now at the vineyard and it is grape-picking time. One of the young casual workers is English boy Roderick. However, he is also a computer hacking genius who is able to transfer 90% of the previous day's takings on the Tokyo stock exchange into his own account. The son of the wealthy Hargreaves, he also targets Charlie and other Jersey residents. In addition to Roderick's activities Jim is recalled to the island when a consignment of hand grenades is discovered in a cargo of whiskey and a French connection is suspected.
The mysterious Hapgood invites Bergerac to a lonely castle in Brittany. He wishes to hire Bergerac as a bodyguard and also to investigate threats on his life. Full recap: When someone fires a volley of shots at them whilst Hapgood is out painting, the result is the termination of Bergerac's services. Undaunted Jim continues his own investigation and via some gossip from Charlie, he forces Hapgood to admit the truth. He is a former assassin who has ""turned his back on the game."" He is being targeted by his replacement, who wishes to remove him from the game permanently. Hapgood hopes to persuade the assassin to follow his lead and see the light. Late at night the assassin attacks but Hapgood inadvertently kills him during a struggle. When the police arrive the next morning, Hapgood is haunted by Bergerac's earlier words, that he will never know who the next assassin will be.
A spiritualist contacts the ghost of a dead arsonist responsible for the death of a young girl at the same time that a new series of fires breaks out resembling his earlier handiwork. Full recap: Charlie asks Jim to investigate Raoul Barnaby, a medium who has gained the favour of Roberta Jardine. Charlie and Roberta's niece, the scheming Pauline, believe that Barnaby is a conman. Barnaby claims to have been contacted by the ghost of a 12 girl who was killed in an arson attack 20 years previously. Soon the child's grave is desecrated and a similar series of arson attacks occur. Jim is charged with a new investigation into the arson attacks and uncovers a link between Roberta Jardine and Jack Plimont, the detective in charge of the case. It appears that Jardine's son was the arsonist and commited suicide by immolation over the unintended death of the girl. Plemont helped to cover up the truth. Meanwhile Susan has sold the former home of the arsonist to Lil and finds ritual fire symbo
