Bethan Gwyndaf is leading a double life. To her friends at school she's your average, fun loving, cocky teen with a normal family but the reality is vastly different. At home she tries to juggle her Father's sociopathic tendencies with her mother's bipolar a particularly severe episode seeing her sectioned in a psychiatric hospital.
With her mum Trina released from hospital and now working with Nana at the local bingo hall, Bethan finds herself free to experience the joys of teenage life. At school Bethan is full of herself as she tries to make a good impression on new girl Cam who she has a crush on. However, Bethan's home life is far from perfect as she becomes ever more combative with her abusive father, Dilwyn.
Bethan and her friends Lydia, Travis and the rest of their classmates go on an overnight visit to a local university. On her return home, Bethan meets the man Trina has been having an affair with, Perry. Despite her reservations, Bethan understands why her mum (Jo Hartley) believes they can both have a better future if she can find a way to be with Perry.
Bethan helps her mother Trina change her life but finds herself suffering as a result. Now having graduated from school, Bethan still can't find the courage to be honest with her friends Travis and Lydia. Instead she retreats into a lifestyle that is safe but threatens her own mental health. Can she break free?
