In this episode of How to Drink, I’m making an original of mine that I came up with called the Gin Whisper. It’s a shaken combination of gin, egg whites, St. Germain, mint and sugar. Give it a try and let me know what you think, good or bad. Cheers!
In this episode of How to Drink, we’re taking a step away from making cocktails and making a very important ingredient for most cocktails: clear ice. I’m not talking about the ice you grab from your refrigerator either, I’m talking about making clear ice. The ice you can see right through that makes every cocktail’s appearance look nice and “cool”. Big shout out and thank you to Camper English at http://www.alcademics.com/ for helping me figure out the ingredients to making clear ice! Cheers!

This is a drink that you aren’t going to want to put down, and keep coming back for more. Cheers!
In this episode of How to Drink,I’m making a classic cocktail from the 1920’s called a French 75. It’s famous for knocking people off their feet like the artillery it takes it’s name from. Earlier versions of the French 75 called for a few dashes of Absinthe, which I tried and highly encourage because it is outstanding! Give it a shot and let me know what you think. Cheers!
In this episode of How to Drink, I’m making a cocktail called the Ramos Gin Fizz that was made famous by Henry C. Ramos in New Orleans in the 1880’s. There aren’t many heavy cream cocktails like this one and after taking a sip you will understand why: it’s delicious. Cheers!

In this episode of How to Drink, I’m making one of my favorite cocktails: the Mai Tai. The Mai Tai may be the pinnacle of Tiki glory and made the way Vic Bergeron invented it in 1944 with a balanced, spirit forward, glass of pure magic. Next time you find yourself at a Tiki Bar, or hosting a Tiki party make sure you have yourself a Mai Tai. You won’t regret it. Cheers!

In this episode of How to Drink, I’m making some homemade Gomme or Gum syrup. A lot of older recipes call for Gomme or Gum syrup, which is nothing more than a simple syrup thickened with the addition of Gum Arabic. Most times you will use plain simple syrup, but if you have an interest in making some Gomme Syrup it’s pretty easy to do. Cheers!
In this episode of How to Drink, I’m making Pineapple Infused Simple Syrup. It’s incredibly easy to infuse flavors into simple syrup, and you can infuse pretty much any flavor that you want! Cheers!
In this episode of How to Drink, I’m making a Clover Club Cocktail, which is a classic and unique cocktail in the sour family that combines Gin, Raspberry, Lemon and Egg White into a refreshing libation. The Clover Club was invented in Philadelphia at the Clover Club where it was the club’s house drink hence the name! Next time you’re in Philly, or just want a taste of old Philadelphia give the Clover Club a try. Cheers!
In this episode of How to Drink, I’m revisiting the Aviation cocktail and making a bit different this time. Last Aviation I made I stirred it with Creme Yvette, which you all kindly pointed out was wrong. So this time I am using Creme de Violet, which is the correct and original ingredients. Cheers!
In this episode of How to Drink, I’m making a classic cocktail, the Whiskey Smash. This one goes back to the birth of modern cocktails in the 1860’s when Jerry Thomas published “The Bon Vivant’s Companion.” It’s quite a bit like a Mint Julep when you get right down to it, though much less sweet than most of the Juleps I’ve had. This a cocktail that you can not go wrong with and will most likely always enjoy. Cheers!
In this episode of How to Drink, I’m taking a look at a cocktail known as the Fog Cutter. This Tiki cocktail is a version of the Tony Ramos 1947 recipe of the Fog Cutter, which I really enjoy! You can never go wrong when choosing this Tiki cocktail, so give it a try! Cheers!
In this episode of How to Drink, I’m making a cocktail that I call the Imperial Cranberry Cobbler, or the Thanksgiving Cobbler. It’s a recipe based on a drink called a Floradora, which is an old cobbler named for the musical of the same name. So this Thanksgiving while you’re spending time with family, or simply relaxing after eating so much food, make yourself a cocktail that you can be thankful for. Happy Thanksgiving!
In this episode of How to Drink, I am making a cocktail presented by Luxardo called the Negroni Bianco. This is a less overpowering bitter than the standard Negroni. In short, this is more than a simply an un-reddended Negroni, and it’s certainly a worthy variation on the classic. Cheers!
In this episode of How to Drink, I am making a cocktail presented by Luxardo called the Amaretto Sour. This version of the Amaretto Sour is a slightly modified version of Jeffery Morgenthaler’s recipe. This is a delicious drink that combines Luxardo Amaretto with Bourbon that you are gonna want to make as soon as possible. Cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I’m partnering up with Luxardo to make a Christmas favorite, Eggnog. This isn’t your regular Eggnog though, I tested out some variations on the classic Eggnog and tweaking proportions to come up with this recipe and this was the way I will always make my Eggnog this way. So whether you’re caroling, or sitting by an open fire, make yourself an Eggnog and enjoy the Holiday season. Merry Christmas!
With the release of Rogue One, I thought about making drink that Han Solo would approve of, so on this episode we are making Han Solo’s Shot First. This drink is pretty simple in that it only consist of hickory smoke and Wormwood Rye. However, you are welcome to try to put your own spin on this drink, maybe with some bitters?! Whichever way you choose to drink it, may the force be with you!
On this episode of How to Drink, I’m making a Champagne Cocktail from Casablanca, which happens to be a big favorite of mine. The drink is fairly straightforward, however, I decided to deviate from what is considered the norm as far as the drink is concerned. But, when you try to make it for yourself you’re welcome to use the stock approach of sugar cub, bitters, cognac, and champagne. Either it, it is a delicious beverage to have! Cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I’m making an El Presidente. This is a classic pre-prohibition cocktail that has a ton of history that reaches all the way to Cuba. I made my version with with Havana Club Cuban Rum and Lillet Blanc, which I was very pleased with. I highly recommend you give the El Presidente a try! Cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I’m making Grenadine! Grenadine is a commonly used syrup that is characterized by being tart and sweet with a red color to it. This is an easy syrup to make and great to have around the bar when needed! Hope you enjoy this syrup as much as I do! Cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I’m making a Jersey Sunset, an old variation on the sling. This cocktail calls for angostura bitters, but I used creole style bitters from “The Bitter Truth.”However you decide to make this delicious cocktail I would love to hear about your choice of bitters for this drink! Cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I’m making the cocktail the Final Ward. The Final Ward is a cocktail from the prohibition era invented at the Detroit Athletic Club and appeared in cocktail guides by 1916. For the original version, the Last Word, swap your rye for gin and your lemon for lime, it’s also incredible. Both versions are great, just depends on if you’re in the mood for gin or rye. Cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I’m addressing the classic and venerable Martini. I decided to make both a Gin Martini and the Dry Martini, which I’m not as big of a fan of as I am the Gin Martini. However, though I side more with the Gin Martini more than the Dry Martini these two drinks were equally enjoyable in making them and I highly encourage to do give them a try. Cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I’m making a Knickerbocker, inspired by the film “The Thin Man” from 1934. Traditionally, this drink would have been served over the ice it was shaken with, but I saw no reason to try it served over a Nick & Nora glass. If you enjoy crime movies like “The Thin Man” and drinking, then I highly encourage giving this cocktail a try. Cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I’m making a Sazerac, which is a drink people have been asking me to cover for some time now. This drink is famously associated with New Orleans, where legend holds that it was invented at the Sazerac House in the 1850’s. Some go as far as to say it’s the first cocktail. Though that is most certainly not true, it still encourage you to give the Sazerac a try for it is delicious. Cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I’m making a Martinez after so many of you requested I make it. I really enjoy this drink and highly recommend you try it. For this Martinez, I decided to use Ransom Old Tom gin, which I found to be really well balanced and easy to drink, and I love a bright citrusy gin drink like this. You can’t go wrong with a Martinez like this, so give it a try and enjoy. Cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, we are kicking of the Tiki drinks for the summer with the legendary Zombie! A creation of Donn Beach this drink is famed for its exotic complexity and its rocket fuel like strength, though I temper the heat on my version just a touch! Cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I’m taking a look at making a Queen’s Park Swizzle. This is a drink invented at the Queen’s Park Hotel in Port au Spain Trinidad around the 1920’s. That sets this drink a bit earlier than the American Tiki Fad got underway, but it’s earned it’s place in the pantheon nonetheless. Referred to by Trader Vic as “the most delightful form of anesthesia given out today” it’s a refreshing and delicious drink you’d be certain to enjoy on any hot summer day. Cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I’m taking a look at a particularly potent libation: Dr. Funk. I’m not sure which legend to believe that follows this drink, but I like the idea of the author of Treasure Island having a doctor mixing up delectable Tiki drinks before Tiki was cool. I decided to mix my version up in a Mai Tai glass but a double rocks glass, or a Tiki mug would be fine too. Cheers!
This week on how to drink I'm making a Halekulani Cocktail, maybe a slightly more obscure Tiki drink, this one comes from the Halekulani Hotel at Waikiki Hawaii. The drink was invented and served at the House Without a Key, a bar at the hotel and just about my favorite name for a bar ever. House without a Key is also the name of the first Charlie Chan novel, and a location around which that series centers.
On this episode of How to Drink, thanks to Luxardo and Anchor Distilling I am making a Singapore Sling. This gin flavored drink was developed by a Hainanese bartender working at the Long Bar in Raffles Hotel, Singapore. This tiki drink was absolutely delicious and I highly recommend it! Cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I’m making a cocktail that was inspired by Game of Thrones called the “Shade of the Evening.” I thoroughly enjoyed making this cocktail by using some of the techniques from Dave Arnold like Nitro-Muddling, which was so much fun. Though my version may not be the exact drink that Dany drinks, it is still delicious and has me feeling like I can conquer whoever. So if you’re as big of a Game of Thrones fan as I am then I highly recommend trying this drink out! Cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I’m partnering again with Luxardo and Anchor Distilling to bring you the Hemingway Daiquiri! This version is a classic alternative to the standard Daiquiri and my personal favorite way to prepare one, and the story goes that Ernest Hemingway had diabetes and he developed this recipe to be a less sweet version of his favorite drink. If you’re like me and love Hemingway then you should give this cocktail a try! Cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I’m partnering with Luxardo to make a Tiki classic for you: the Jungle Bird, or to be more specific, the Jungle Bird Bianco. If your tastes range toward the Negroni and the Boulevardier but you’re looking for something in that Tiki Style then this might just be the drink for you! Cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, it’s another Game of Thrones edition and I decided to make an original cocktail I call “The Iron Price.” Based off of the drink called “The Flip” in the 1600’s I bring the basic formula of combining Ale, Spirits, Egg and Sugar, which was heated and mixed by skewering the drink with a red hot iron. This was one of my favorite drinks to make and enjoy. It’s a hearty, meal like, drink that’s wonderful on a cold, wet evening on the isle of Pike where the Iron Born hail from in Game of Thrones. Let me know what you think of “The Iron Price” and if you went to the length of heating it with a hot iron! Cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I’m making a Jet Pilot to continue our Tiki series. If you liked the Zombie you’ll probably love this one, the Jet Pilot is awfully close in its composition to that drink. I go a little off and serve this drink in a pineapple, and rethought my choice of garnish and presentation. Either way this drink is a must have and I encourage you to try it. I hope you enjoy! Cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, it is the final episode of our Tiki series so I decided to make a Scorpion Bowl. This shareable bowl version is the Trader Vic's version and it’s fantastic. It is filled with Rum, Gin, and Brandy and though those three together may sound bad, they are most certainly not! Thanks to the balancing nature of the syrups and juices we’re using here this drink manages to taste exotic and sweet. So grab some friends to share this masterpiece with and enjoy! Cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I am looking at a cocktail made famous by “The Big Lebowski” called the White Russian. This is the first drink within the show that I use vodka, and to be honest the first drink that I’m not a fan of. So because of that I decided to make it two ways. Hope you enjoy. Cheers!
On this episode of Chaser, I am remaking the White Russian due to making it incorrectly the last time. So I decided to make a quick video with my iPhone to redo the White Russian and do right by you! Hope you enjoy. Cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I am taking a look at the Vesper Martini created by Ian Fleming in Casino Royal. This cocktail is mainly a large glass of gin, vodka, and Kina Lillet (unfortunately doesn’t exist anymore). There are numerous fixes for this issue floating around, in this case I opt for one of the more accessible approaches: Lillet Blanc and Angostura bitters! If you’re feeling like living like Bond then I suggest you try the Vesper Martini. Hope you enjoy! Cheers!
On this episode of Chaser, I am taking another look at the Vesper Martini that I tried out in my last “How to Drink” episode. In the first episode, I used Stoil vodka, Ford’s Gin, Lillet Blanc and some angostura bitters. Though my research told me to go with bitters and Lillet, you all were right in suggesting I use Cocci Americano and Kina l’Aero d’Or, which was far better! Hope you enjoy this version better. Cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I am taking a look at the “Orange Whip” from The Blues Brothers. In the movie, the Orange Whip makes its appearance after it is ordered by John Candy. This drink is on the lower end of the spectrum as far as alcohol by volume goes, nothing like a Martini or an Old Fashioned. It’s more of something like a guilty pleasure. Give it a try and I hope you enjoy. Cheers!
On this episode of Chaser, I am taking another look at Eggnog. Last time I made Eggnog, I made it with bourbon and Maraschino liqueur, and I loved it. This year I thought we should explore some other methods for making this Christmas cocktail. This time I’m trying the Baltimore Eggnog, the Texan Eggnog, and Jeffery Morganthaler’s Greatest Eggnog. If you want to try mixing up your Christmas spirits this year I suggest you give these cocktails a try. Cheers!
On this episode, I am returning after a long hiatus and am happy to report that “How to Drink” is back. In the video I give a view updates and how I’ll be moving forward. Cheers!
On this episode of Chaser, I am taking another look at the Margarita but making a Salt Air Margarita and a Tequila Daisy. To go along with those drinks, I will also be giving a tour of my wonderful 600 square foot apartment! So welcome to my home, and I hope you enjoy. Cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I’m going to be showing you how to make the best brunch cocktail on earth, the Gordon’s Breakfast. This is a Gin and Cucumber drink courtesy of Milk+Honey, and it is one of my absolute favorites! Now, the Gordon’s Breakfast is a variation of the Gordon’s Cup, so I will be making this drink both ways but either way both are sublime brunch drinks. Hope you enjoy, cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I am taking a look at a classic cocktail called a Boulevardier. The Boulevardier is a cocktail with origins in Harry’s New York Bar (which of course is in Paris) in the 1920’s. It’s a combination of Bourbon, Campari, and Vermouth. At its core it is a simple drink that really doesn’t need improving, so I present it here fair simple. Hope you enjoy, cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I'm giving the easy sipping Tequila + Grapefruit cooler that I love as a brunch drink: The Paloma. This particular recipe comes from Ivy Stark, and I really think you’re going to like it. It’s a simple refreshing drink and you really cannot go wrong in trying one! Hope you enjoy, cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I am making the best Cosmo you’ve ever had in honor of “Sex and the City’s” 20th anniversary. The Cosmopolitan is more than just Vodka cranberry, it is comprised of multiple ingredients, and as I demonstrate in this episode it’s one that leaves some room to improve upon too. Hope you enjoy, cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I’m taking a look at a single serving version of Philadelphia Fish House Punch from Double Indeminty, the great noir! If you’ve never seen Double Indemnity, or aren’t very familiar with Film Noir, you really owe it to yourself to see this one and to give the Fish House Punch a try. Hope you enjoy, cheers!
On this episode, I am doing something a little different! This week I go to Bar Convent Brooklyn to hang out with my friends from the House of Angostura and make a Trinidad Sour. I met up with tons of people making all kinds of new spirits and liqueurs, and tried some awesome drinks. Hope you enjoy, cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I’m taking a look at the Sherry Cobbler! The Sherry Cobbler is really a drink that may very well predate the Old Fashioned. It’s pretty easy to make, just a combination of orange wedges, sugar, sherry, and shaken over ice and served on crushed ice. Give it a try, you won’t be disappointed! Hope you enjoy, cheers!
On this episode of Chaser, I’m going to be making the Cosmopolitan the perfect way, the Dale DeGroff way. This drink is light, refreshing and delicious. You’ll love it! This version of the Cosmo is the ideal version for your “Sex and the City” viewing parties. Hope you enjoy, cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I’m taking a look at a cocktail that is supposedly perfect for hangovers, the Red Eye from the movie Cocktail with Tom Cruise. It’s a pretty straightforward drink with a combination of beer, tomato juice, egg, and hot sauce, but it’s better than it sounds to be honest! I wouldn’t say that this is a Brunch drink, but one you’d probably find hanging out in a dive bar. Either way, if you’re feeling awful the morning after a night of drinking I highly encourage giving the Red Eye a try. Hope you enjoy, cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I’m making a classic brunch cocktail with a perfect Bloody Mary. You’d probably recognize this drink filled to the brim with all kinds of meats, cheeses, pickles, or anything that the bartender can squeeze into it. In this video, I’m keeping it simple with the traditional celery stalk, some olives, and gherkins. If your hangover is raging, and you’re trying to freshen up, I find the kick of hot sauce and horseradish in a Bloody Mary to be the perfect thing. Hope you enjoy, cheers!
On this episode of Chaser, I I'm tackling Orange Liqueurs. What is Curaçao? What is Triple Sec? Grand Marnier? Cointreau? I dive a little into the history of them, and then do some side by side taste testing of a few key bottles to find out.
On this episode of How to Drink, I am recreating the Moloko Plus from A Clockwork Orange. I’m making this drink as close as possible to the drink in the film besides all of the illicit drugs so that things don’t get too out of hand, and that we stay somewhat reasonable. If you’re a fan of “A Clockwork Orange” give this drink a try, it was invented by Morgan Shick at Trick Dog in San Francisco and it does not disappoint. Hope you enjoy, cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I’m taking a look at a summer cocktail that will cool off the summer heat called the Jack Rose. It’s a delightfully crisp cocktail to enjoy during the dog days of summer with a flavor that is crisp, cool, tart, apple-y. I love this drink and highly encourage it for when you feel like you can escape the heat! Hope you enjoy, cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I am showing you how to enjoy a Luxardo Spritz three ways. You and your guests will love it! Make sure to follow Luxardo for recipes, tips and more! Hope you enjoy, cheers!

On this episode of Chaser, I am going to show you how to make Oleo-Saccharum and the best grapefruit soda I’ve ever had. Oleo-Saccharum is an awesome ingredient to have, and one that’s not quite like anything else behind the bar. Once you’ve learned how to make it, you’ll find yourself experimenting with all kinds of citrus to make all kinds of oleos. Hope you enjoy, cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I am making a Bitter Paloma and I have to say that it is the best Paloma I have ever had. I used Luxardo for this recipe, so make sure to follow Luxardo for all their cocktail recipes, tips and more! Hope you enjoy this Paloma as much as I did! Cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I’m taking a look at the rum staple, the Mojito. The Mojito is of course the famed national drink of Cuba and came to prominence there, typically made with Barcardi Rum. It's is a summer favorite, and it’s simple enough to make. These drinks are light, refreshing, delicious, and frankly dangerous because they will sneak up on you. Hope you enjoy, cheers!
On this episode of Chaser, I’m showing you how to make your own ginger syrup. It’s a staple in my home bar for use in Dark and Stormys, Mule drinks, and also just to make a delicious ginger beer when I’m looking for something non-alcoholic. There’s not too much to the process here so follow along and by the end of the video you will be making Ginger syrup before you know it!
On this episode of How to Drink, I’m taking a look at how to make the perfect Dark and Stormy cocktail. Fun fact, Gosling’s enforces a claim they hold over the copyright of the drink, and requires it to be made with their rum. Which I don’t do here, so however you like to make your Dark and Stormy, I encourage you to do so. Hope you enjoy, cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink,I make the 20th Century Limited Cocktail, a drink from North By Northwest, an absolute classic film from the 50's, and my personal favorite of Alfred Hitchcock’s. Hope you enjoy, cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I present the New York Sour or as it might have been known in the 1890's a Fancy Sour. There were "Fancy" variations of all kinds of drinks back then, the idea being to embellish a cocktail to its maximum limit and arrive at something you'd still actually want to drink. Party like it's 1899 with the New York Sour, a Whiskey Sour variation from the golden age of cocktails. Cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I’m taking a look at a delicious and unique drink known as the Sour Cherry Gin Martinez. A drink that you definitely need in your home bar! I’m happy to be brought to you by Luxardo, and wouldn't you know, they've got a brand new product on the market and you should pick up a bottle. Of course, I'm talking about Sour Cherry Gin, a London Dry style gin that's been infused with the Luxardo Orchard Marasca Cherries, and it's frankly delicious.
On this episode of How to Drink, I present a new Tiki cocktail born from a love of Magnum P.I. called “The King Kamehameha.” The original Magnum P.I. series premiered in 1980, and with it men across the world started sporting Magnum’s (Tom Selleck) iconic mustache! If you're not familiar, it's a one hour drama that follows the exploits of ex-navy-seal-turned-private-eye Thomas Magnum as he solves various crimes and mysteries on the Hawaiian Islands. He lives on the estate of the illustrious Robin Masters, a fictional author, and works for him testing the estates security. Happy Malaloween! Cheers! King Kamehameha was born in 1735 and was the first King of a unified Hawaii, an exceptionally important figure in Hawaiian history. It's also the name of the club Magnum's friend owns and where some of the action of the show takes place. This drink takes it's name from that.
On this episode of How to Drink, I’m taking a look at Citizen Kane’s Rosebud cocktail! Just like Citizen Kane, this drink is complex and wonderful filled with many ingredients. A delicious blend of rums and fruit juices to celebrate and pay homage to Citizen Kane, one of the greatest and most influential films of all time. Cheers!
On this episode of How to Drink, I am gearing up for this week's release of "The Crimes of Grindelwald", so I made a Lobe Blaster from Fantastic Beasts! A big part of this drink is in its presentation, the cocktail will change colors from blue to red in the glass, appropriate for a "magic" cocktail. I like to serve it with a small bottle of the lemon juice on the side, so the guest can drop in the potion and watch the colors change. The secret to this neat trick is in my "blue gin", which is made by steeping dried Butterfly Pea Blossoms in gin. The flowers quickly lend their pigment to the gin without affecting it's flavor. The neat thing about this color is that it's a natural PH indicator, so when we increase the acidity it will shift colors to red. Magic! Or maybe just chemistry. At any rate it's a tasty and easy to drink cocktail your fellow wizards are sure to love.
On this episode of How to Drink, nothing warms me up on the holidays like a Hot Spiked Apple Cider! Try this favorite drink of mine this Thanksgiving! Your Thanksgiving dinner, or really any holiday party, will be greatly improved by this delicious Spiked Apple Cider. There's nothing complicated about this of course, and you could make this in any number of ways, but this recipe is by far my favorite method of preparing this warming holiday beverage. I dare say it is perfect. Would an Applejack or Calvados work here? Certainly, but for my money Bourbon is the order of the day, and a better bourbon at that. It will pay dividends. This drink is very easy to scale up to a large punch bowl size, simply keep the cider hot with a bottle of bourbon nearby so that guests can spike their own drinks as they serve, otherwise alcohol will be lost to the simmering. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving and that this spiked cider brings warmth to your table. If you have your own recipe, I'd love to hear about it in the comments!
With the disappointing release of Fallout 76 I'm feeling nostalgic for the original, and creating an original cocktail to go with it. Come on down to Vault HTD for a Stimpak Shot!

This week I'm taking the day off from making drinks to take a look back at all the fun we had together in 2018, and look forward to 2019. It's the clipshow!
This week I'm making the original Moscow Mule, a drink created by a marketing team with a desperate need to sell more Vodka in the 1940's. That doesn't mean it isn't a tasty drink! It's a fantastic drink! The Moscow Mule is a delightfully refreshing combination of vodka and spicy ginger beer and there are definitely times when nothing else will do. The copper mug has no real historical precedent other than more marketing but hey, it looks great! Giving this drink its very own unique serving vessel is a big part of what sets it apart and lead to it's enduring popularity so kudos to the inventors. In my version I elevate the drink by crafting my own ginger beer in the mug by combining homemade ginger syrup and seltzer, I've provided the links to those recipes above if you want to follow in my steps exactly but feel free to swap my syrup + seltzer combo in favor of a good ginger beer if you're so inclined. Without further rambling I proudly present The Only Moscow Mule You Need!
I'm making Irish Coffee the way they do at the Dead Rabbit and it's the best damn Irish Coffee you'll find anywhere on earth, without actually going to the Dead Rabbit...

I was a huge HUGE fan of the 1984 film Karate Kid growing up so I had to check out the once YouTube now Netflix series Cobra Kai. I am happy to say I was pleasantly surprised. You wont find a whole lot of drinking on the show besides the occasional Coors and a martini ordered by Johnny so instead I relied on an old tiki recipe from Don the Beachcomber called a Cobra's Fang. There have been many variations on this classic over the years but the core ingredients have remained the standard rum, passionfruit juice, lime juice and orange juice. When I was developing a drink for this episode I started thinking about California, which is the number one producer of almonds in the world and used that - along with Johnny's general badass nature - as inspiration for the Cobra Kaitale. Enjoy!
Hail to the King Baby. This drink will swallow your souls, so come get some. Groovy. The first Evil Dead was made on a shockingly small budget, Evil Dead 2 is almost a remake that focuses more on the humorous side of the horror and then there is Army of Darkness which falls more in the absurd/fantasy/comedy genre. Later Starz created the series Ash vs Evil Dead which continues the series AND give us a definitive drink called the Pink F*ck. The show describes the drink as ""a proprietary mix of liqueurs and spirits, garnished with orange rind and nutmeg...oh and there's a sh*t ton of ketamine in it."" They give a detailed description of the ingredients on the show and while I will not be using ketamine, I did look into what it would taste like and came up with this version of the Pink F*ck that I believe is pretty close to what is described in the show - it was awful so I also made my own version which I am calling a Pink Liaison.
So in Season three Episode Three of Hannibal we see Dr. Hannibal Lector serve Punch Romaine to a um... guest... of his. It doesn't go well for the guest BUT it is a tasty drink with a heavy historic pedigree: It was a creation of Auguste Escoffier and a component of the last dinner served aboard the Titanic. I was trying to get this one out in time for Halloween but, that turned out impossible, oh well! To make this drink you'll need shaved ice, and you can get by with crushed or blender ice, if you're kinda nuts, you can buy a specific machine for shaving ice like I did.
Let's talk about Vikings, who they were, what they did, where they lived, and importantly, what they drank. Firstly, "Vikings" are a specific group, or activity even, of Norse and Scandinavian peoples. One becomes a viking when they head off on an adventure to raid and conquest for money- basically they're pirates. The "Viking Age" runs from roughly the 800's-1200's and is a period of expansion and conquest from Scandinavia that is sort of the background to what we'd call "The Dark Ages". The Viking's drank well, frankly anything they could get their hands on, but they're commonly associated with mead. Mead is a fermented beverage that is probably the oldest fermented drink on Earth. It's made by fermenting honey into a drink about has strong as wine. It's sometimes called Honey Wine, or wine made from honey, but in my experience this annoys both wine drinkers and mead drinkers alike. The thing about mead is that even though Vikings prized it, it was expensive and rare stuff to lay hands on. It takes a lot of bees to make any quantity of mead, so it would be reserved for festivals and holidays, and the very wealthy. Mostly they drank ale, like, probably more than water. That's not to say they were rip-roaring drunk all the time, in fact there's a lot of viking prose about consuming in moderation, but low abv ales would often be safer than un-purified water. The ales common during the viking would have certainly been ales and not lagers, and they would typically rely on barley for a grain bill but could really involve just about anything as a fermentable or flavoring component. So in building a "Viking Appropriate Cocktail" here, I'm keeping in mind all the things Vikings liked to drink, and had access to. I found a vodka brand called Barr Hill Vodka, it's vodka made from a pure honey mash. Now, they call this stuff vodka, but it's got a lot more character than the typical vodka. It retains a lot of the honey flavor, and frankly I'd be inclined to call it a honey
What sorts of Meads and Ales did Vikings actually drink? Today I taste a bunch of them to find out. Part Two of last weeks episode made with Ubisoft for Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Thanks Ubisoft! While creating the ""A Drink For Vikings? Assassin's Creed Valhalla"" episode I also shot a segment of me tasting different meads and ales, however when the episode was cut together we thought this segment deserved it's own episode, so here it is! I have been asked many times to do a deeper dive into meads so I hope this gives you a good idea of some of the different options out there. If you want to drink along please see a shopping list below of the different products that show up in this episode.
Today I'm looking at a loosely connected history of wine based mixed drinks from Spain, or, at least Spain adjacent. Talking about Sangaree, Sangria, and Kalimotxo. Now, technically Sangaree was probably invented in England in the 1700's, but it feels Iberian somehow. Partially it's the name, partially it's the port, but, I don't know. From there we jump ahead about a hundred years to the 1963 World's Fair where by all accounts Sangria makes a splash at the Spain pavilion. What Sangria invented in the 60's? Uh, maybe. Some people claim Sangria is really part of a tradition of mixed sweetened wines going back to ancient Rome, and that "Sangria" is about a thousand years old, and maybe that's true. The thing is, I can't find any record of the name "Sangria" being used any time before the 60's. So, maybe the traditions that go into Sangria are ancient, I think the actual specific thing is pretty new. Meanwhile we bounce over to the Basque region to enjoy some Kalimotxo, which is red wine and coca cola mixed fifty fifty. Winey wine wine, let's goooooooo!
Today I'm revisiting a drink I've looked at on the channel before, the Vesper Martini. Named for Jame's Bond's love interest in his debut novel, Casino Royale, this drink has loomed large amongst Bond fans for years and, but I wanted to know: is it any good? Because this is a drink that Bond threw together on the fly to sort of impress the room, and it's a weird drink. Somewhere between a Dry Martini and a Gin and Tonic but with Vodka for some reason no one can explain, this is a confused drink. It's complicated by the fact that the key ingredient, Kina Lillet, no longer exists. There are two very good substitutes available though, and so today I explore them, and the shaking vs. stirring question, in a four way drink showdown I call: The Drink Matrix.
All my recommended holiday buys in one place- gifts for the mixologist in your life, or yourself!
Coquito is often referred to as "Puerto Rican Eggnog" and now that I've had some I totally get why people say that but... Coquito is not Eggnog. Near as I can tell Coquito is a decidedly 20th century creation which first appears in print in Cucine a Gusto, a cookbook of Puerto Rican dishes from 1952. As typically, particularly when I'm dealing with something I've never had, I like to find the earliest possible version of it, the roots recipe. So today I make a very 1950's style Coquito, but I leave the rum as a variable and test the same Coquito with 10 different rums to figure out which is my favorite. The results came as a surprise to me! Full credit to Giuseppe González, the recipe I'm using is from him, though my understanding here is that it's the 50's standard.
Today, with the help of my sponsor Haus, I'm taking a look at the world of Aperitifs and sampling what I consider to be a pretty decent cross section of the product category, while hopefully providing some decent historical information to boot. Not much more to say about this so, on with the show.
Possibly Authentic Grog and The Wellerman
I set out to find the perfect Manhattan by making 42 of them. In an earlier episode, the Vesper Martini specifically, I mused about the idea of a drink matrix: taking two variables, plotting them on an X and Y axis and running through them all. It seemed like a fun idea, and I asked twitter what I should start with, and the most common answer was a Manhattan. Seven ryes crossed by six vermouths yield forty two drinks, which got me into a bit of trouble as you'll see in this episode. But I also think this is super interesting and really informative, and there's some real surprises here too.
Angostura Bitters are a well known bar essential, in addition to tons of drinks calling for dashes and drops of that deep red nectar of the gods, the very definition of the word "cocktail" sort of requires their inclusion. With that established, are there drinks that call for larger amounts of Angostura Bitters as a central foundational component? In fact there are, and this episode is about three of them.
