Like all great feats of the imagination, the EcoJet began life on a napkin. As an auto enthusiast, Jay Leno had always wanted to design his own turbine-engined car, and when he conceived the notion for a high-performance, yet environmentally friendly, vehicle the pen and napkin came out. Eight months later the results were premiered at the 2006 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas. The primary goal was to design and build a car that ran on environmentally friendly, renewable bio-diesel fuel and that didn't drive like a Prius. Of course, as Jay has quipped, that makes harvest time the only time of year when there'll be plenty of fuel available, but that's beside the point. The heart of the EcoJet is a 650-horsepower Honeywell LT-101 turbine engine, which sits inside a modified Corvette Z06 hydroformed aluminum frame with aluminum and magnesium structural and chassis components. The vehicle's shell is an advanced construction of carbon fiber over Kevlar, and the body is painted with environmentally friendly paint from Glasurit's 9 Line Waterborne Technology lines, which is designed to dramatically reduce emissions during application. Though the car was built almost entirely at Jay's Big Dog Garage, the design and engineering was actually overseen by GM under the leadership of Ed Welburn, GM Vice President of Global Design and Frank Saucedo, head of GM's Design Studio in North Hollywood, California. But nobody said that designing and building an environmentally friendly supercar was quick and easy. It's been three long years since the inception of the EcoJet project, and there have been many bumps along a painstaking road. It didn't take long for its monster turbine engine to burn out clutch discs, brakes, and torque converter. Jay and the Big Dog crew always knew that the EcoJet would be a long term labor of love and a work in progress. Now that the EcoJet is finally on the road and clocking speeds in excess of 150 mph, the next
The White Steamer was a near instant success, despite the fact that it cost more than a Rolls Royce! As the orders poured in, the Whites found it necessary to form the White Motor Company in 1905 to accommodate massive expansion, and before long, the White Steamer became the White House's first official car and the Army's standard vehicle, according to Jay.
Steam power was a no-brainer around the turn of the century. You could use anything that would burn as fuel; the steam engine was purely mechanical and had few moving parts; and steam power provided instantaneous torque, eliminating the need for gears, and allowing a vehicle to climb hills in a snap. By 1900, there were about 100 firms building steam cars in the United States. Half of the 2000 cars on the road were powered by steam, and the most popular of the American steam cars was the Stanley Steamer.
The house of Bugatti is known for producing some of the fastest, most exclusive cars of all time. Iconoclastic founder Ettore Bugatti was born to a family of sculptors and architects in Milan. Rather than follow in his famous father's footsteps, Bugatti brought the family aesthetic to designing engines and racing vehicles.
The oldest continuous British automobile manufacturer, the Morgan Motor Company was founded in 1909 by H.F.S. Morgan. A trained engineer, Morgan opened a garage business out of which he also sold cars and started one of England's first bus lines. After purchasing an early three-wheeled vehicle, Morgan decided to build one for personal use, with economy and speed as his ultimate goals.
Shortly after Vincenzo Lancia was born in 1881, his father chose his future, deciding that his son would become a lawyer. Sadly, Vincenzo proved inattentive at his studies, so papa Giuseppe reformulated his plan, sending his son to college at age 12 with the goal of becoming an accountant. It was about that time that Vincenzo started hanging out at the local bike shop, and soon demonstrated talent as a mechanic.
What makes a Hummer look like a Geo Metro? A 1941 American LaFrance fire truck, that's what. With a 256 horsepower engine under the hood and a unique modification in back, this classic beauty not only runs like a dream, but is also the most practical vehicle in Jay's collection. All that, and it only costs a measly 200 bucks to fill up the tank.
In the late 1940s, engineer and RAF pilot Colin Chapman decided to utilize the experience he gained in the skies on the ground, by building a racecar in his girlfriend's garage. Born in 1890, George Brough was the second son of W.E. Brough, the creator of the original Brough motorcycle. As William junior turned his energy to shipbuilding, George became his father's most dedicated road tester, proving his greed for speed in the London - Edinburgh Trial. George placed first in 1910, 1911, and 1912, thus winning the Motor Cycling Cup.
When W.O. Bentley reluctantly sold his company to Rolls Royce in 1931, he never dreamed that his marque would become akin to the company's redheaded stepchild. Chief Engineer Mike Dunn joined the company in 1983, and one of his first tasks was to re-imagine the Mulsanne Turbo, which was pretty much a superfast Silver Spirit.
In 1901, bicycle racer and builder George Hendee teamed up with engineer Carl Oscar Hedstrom to build a 1.75 hp single cylinder motorcycle prototype with a revolutionary chain drive. This motorized bicycle met with immediate success, and the 1933 Indian Motorcycle. Indian Motocycle Company was soon formed in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Jay Leno welcomes automotive journalist Jason Cammisa to the garage, but there's a problem: Jason crashed his 1980 Rover 3500 V8 on the way to the show! Find out how a cross-country drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles led to a blind spot mishap with a pickup truck and another car. Jason reveals that despite the accident, the car itself ran perfectly and proved to be an "amazing driving car." He explains that his love for the car stems from his memories of driving one in high school and that he bought this particular Rover sight unseen after hearing about it from a podcast listener. Jay and Jason dive deep into the fascinating history of this car, including its V8 engine—a former American-made Buick aluminum motor that "transformed" the Rover. They discuss the car's unique "hatchback style inside," its design influence from Ferrari and Maserati, and the peculiar factory error that made the cars repel rust proofing. Jason also shows off a unique dash feature: a gauge that measures
Jay Leno gets an exclusive look at his neighbor's pristine 1989 Porsche Speedster, a car with only 2,600 miles on the odometer. Owned by voiceover artist Rino Romano, this car is a "reincarnation of the original" Speedster from the 1950s. Rino shares the fascinating history of this model, a modern "Turbo Look" car with a wide body, upgraded suspension, and brakes. They discuss how the original Speedster was created at the request of marketing genius Max Hoffman as a lighter, less expensive alternative to the pricier Porsches of the day. Jay and Rino explore the car's unique features, including its G50 gearbox, a 3.2-liter air-cooled engine, and a roof that is only meant for "emergency purposes". Rino admits he's decided to start driving the car more, as it's been a "garage queen" for most of its life. The episode also touches on the unique aspects of car collecting and the appeal of Porsche's air-cooled engines. Experience the thrill of a 35-year-old car that feels brand new
Jay Leno takes a break from modern supercars to teach his producer and director, David Swift, how to drive a 1925 Ford Model T. For anyone under 40, this is a fascinating look at the counterintuitive controls of a true antique, a car that Jay calls "the iPhone of its day." This "mennonite" model T was originally sold for just $260 and features a simple, splash-lubricated engine with no oil or water pump. The car runs on a magneto, meaning you don't even need a battery to start it. Jay walks David through the complicated process of starting and driving the car, from setting the advance and retard for the spark to using the unique three-pedal system. David discovers firsthand why "if you start to panic, you're in trouble" in a car with rear-wheel-only brakes and no standard clutch. This episode is a must-watch for anyone who's ever wondered what came before modern cars. Jay also shares surprising historical tidbits, including Henry Ford's connection to Thomas Edison, and the rumor tha
Get ready for a wild ride as Jay Leno brings out a serious piece of machinery: his 1972 Alvis Scorpion Tank! Jay is joined by his friend, comedian Jeff Dunham, who is a fellow collector of "weird vehicles". This light-duty tank holds the record for the world's fastest at 51 miles an hour. Jay and Jeff explore the unique features of this vehicle, including its aluminum construction which keeps its weight to a surprisingly light 17,000 pounds. It's powered by a 4.2-liter Jaguar motor, the same engine found in the E-Type. Jay explains that the tank is street-legal thanks to its rubber blocks on the treads, which prevent it from tearing up the road. Jeff climbs into the driver's seat and learns how to operate the Scorpion, which is controlled by two levers and a foot-operated transmission. Jay points out the 76mm main gun , smoke grenades, and the periscope for driving with the hatch closed. The episode is not all fun and games, however. Jay and Jeff take a moment to reflect on the seri
Jay Leno sits down with the masterminds behind the latest Tesla Model S: Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen and Lead Engineer Lars Moravy. This episode offers an exclusive look into the new updates and design philosophies that make the latest Model S the "best version of this car" ever built. Unveiling New Technology: Carbon Ceramic Brakes: The duo details the new carbon ceramic brakes, now a standard option on the Plaid. Unlike other carbon brakes, these are made with a continuous carbon matrix, providing excellent stopping power even when cold. This is especially useful for one-pedal driving, which Jay says has left his own car's original brake pads in near-perfect condition. Thermal System & Range: Discover the new "super minimal version two" thermal system, which uses a cast aluminum manifold to improve cooling and heating efficiency for the entire powertrain. This has increased the real-world range on the long-range model to 410 miles and significantly narrowed the gap between
Jay Leno gets behind the wheel of a truly rare "unicorn"—a 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix SJ with a 4-speed manual transmission. This "banker's hot rod" combines the comfort and luxury of a big car with the performance of a muscle car. The SJ designation is a nod to the Duesenberg supercharged J model, the most powerful American car of the 1930s. Jay is joined by the owner, Scott Mansour, who brought the car all the way from Cincinnati, Ohio. Scott shares the incredible story of how he found the car, which had been parked on jack stands in its original owner's garage for 27 years with only 13,000 miles on the odometer. It was the rare 4-speed transmission that sealed the deal for him. With only 302 of these cars ever made with this engine and transmission package, this is a rare treat. Jay and Scott discuss the car's original components, from its 428-cubic-inch engine rated at 370 horsepower to its factory vinyl roof and Mag Look wheels. Jay praises the car's "talking motor" and low-end tor
Jay Leno gets his hands on a rare English sports car, a TVR Tuscan S, and meets with TVR Garage's Will Gavin and the car's owner, Mike Welling. Jay is a huge fan of the car because TVR developed its own engine, the "Speed Six", rather than using a common outsourced motor. The fiberglass-bodied car weighs only 2,300 pounds and has a 4.0-liter, four-valve, twin-cam straight-six engine that produces 390 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. The engine's cylinder head is wide because it was based on a motorbike engine design and features finger followers for the camshafts. Will explains that the car is one of only three in the United States and that only around 1,600 of them were ever built. Mike shares his "love affair" with TVRs, explaining that this is his second Tuscan, and he even bought this one sight unseen because of its pristine, fully restored condition and brand-new engine. Jay and Mike take the car for a spin and are impressed by its power and the way it handles. The episode de
Jay Leno has been searching for this car since the day it came out, but it has always eluded him. The 1990 Mercedes-Benz 190 E Evo II was built as a "BMW killer" to compete in the DTM race series, and only 502 were ever made. This rare example comes from the Audrain Museum collection in Newport, Rhode Island, and has just 8,000 kilometers on the odometer. Jay sits down with Sean O'Donnell from the Audrain Museum to discuss the car's unique features, including its 2.5-liter Cosworth-developed engine with a 16-valve head, which produces about 230 horsepower and a redline of 7,700 RPM. They also examine the famous aerodynamic body kit, which was designed by a professor at the University of Stuttgart to improve the car's drag coefficient and increase downforce. The car also features hydraulic, adjustable suspension, and 17-inch alloy wheels—a first for Mercedes-Benz. Jay, who admits he was a "snob" when the car was new, now appreciates its unique blend of race-car-like handling and solid
In this special episode of Assess and Caress, Jay Leno and appraiser Donald Osborne analyze three diverse automotive treasures from the Vehicle Museum in Newport, Rhode Island: a 1957 Ford Thunderbird, a 1951 Ferrari 212 Inter, and a 2019 Porsche 911 Speedster. Instead of determining which car has appreciated the most, they examine which one has depreciated the most in value over the last five years. The Contenders: 1957 Ford Thunderbird: Once a massive sales success that outsold the Corvette five to one, the Thunderbird was marketed as a "personal luxury car" with creature comforts like power windows and a V8 engine. Jay notes that cars from the 1950s seem to be "falling off a cliff" in value because younger generations don't connect with the lack of modern amenities like power steering or seatbelts. 1951 Ferrari 212 Inter: As one of the first road-going Ferraris, this car features a chassis built by Ferrari and an elegant body by Vignale. The "Inter" model was the road-going ve
Jay Leno steps away from cars to feature something completely different and truly amazing: the Cirrus SR22T G7 Plus airplane. Jay's producer, David Swift, a pilot himself, told him about this plane, which boasts unique safety features not found in other aircraft. Jay is joined by Cirrus product directors Ivy and Seneca, who explain the groundbreaking technology. The Self-Landing System: The Cirrus SR22 is the first piston-driven engine plane to incorporate the Emergency Auto Land system, developed in partnership with Garmin. The system, which can be engaged by a button or automatically, takes over control if the pilot is incapacitated or behaving erratically. It manages the autopilot, navigation, communication, and all engine controls, including the throttle and fuel pump. The software intelligently determines the most appropriate airport based on weather, terrain, and altitude, then lands the plane and shuts down the engine. The plane even communicates with passengers using easy-to
In this episode of Assess and Caress, Jay Leno and appraiser Donald Osborne tackle a question central to the collector car world: Hot Rod or Stock? They compare two Porsches that look similar but have vastly different market stories. Both cars were brought to the garage courtesy of the Our Dream Museum in Newport, Rhode Island. The contenders are a 1959 Porsche 356 1600 Normal and a 1956 Porsche 356 modified by Rod Emory into an "Outlaw". The Stock Car: The 1959 356 Normal is a cherished, two-owner car that has been in the same family for over 30 years and represents a period correct time capsule. Donald is quick to point out the car's amazing build quality and iconic pre-war aerodynamic look. Jay, however, admits that as a young man, he couldn't understand why anyone would buy a 60-horsepower Porsche when a Corvette offered 350 horsepower for less money. The Outlaw: The Rod Emory "Outlaw" is a completely modified, or "reimagined," version of the 356. Emory Motorsports are restorers
Jay Leno is finally getting behind the wheel of a car he read about decades ago—the one-of-one 1968 Oldsmobile 442 with a front-wheel-drive secret! Automotive appraiser Donald Osborne tracked down this incredibly rare vehicle, and Jay is joined by the car's current owner, Fred Frederick (aka "Four-Four-Two Fred"). The Secret: The car appears to be a stock 1968 442, but Hurst Performance took the car and converted it to front-wheel drive in a rapid 45-day process back in 1967. They achieved this by taking the entire drivetrain and front-end torsion bar suspension from an Oldsmobile Toronado ("Fournado" is the nickname for this creation) and transplanting it into the mid-sized 442 body shell. Why the Conversion? Circumventing GM's Rules: The conversion allowed Hurst to install the massive 455 cubic inch engine into the intermediate-sized body, bypassing General Motors' rule limiting that body to 400 cubic inches. Testing a New Concept: It was an exercise to prove that a high-perfor
Jay Leno and appraiser Donald Osborne celebrate "Top Down Fun" by assessing three very different convertibles from the Aldrin Museum in Newport, Rhode Island, to determine which one has appreciated the most in percentage terms over the last five years. The Contenders: 1964 Austin Healey 3000 BJ7: A quintessential English sports car representing a highly desired transition model, as the '64 BJ7 was the first with roll-up windows. Donald notes that even as the demographic for this classic matures, the car has maintained its value. 1964 Cadillac Deville Convertible: An icon of mid-century American luxury. This model was technologically advanced for its time, available with the first automatic climate control and cruise control in an American car. Its value has held steady, continuing to appeal to a new, diverse audience. 2002 Chevrolet Camaro SS 35th Anniversary: This limited-edition performance car celebrates the Camaro model. It boasts a six-speed manual gearbox, which was a no-cost
