In the 1960s, it seemed clear that the future was the car. Amsterdam had its own plans about how to make the city more car-friendly. Some of these plans failed, others only partially. When it comes to differences between life in North America versus life in the Netherlands, grocery shopping might just be the biggest thing. In this video I discuss the differences between the fresh-food approach taken in the Netherlands compared to the bulk shopping car-centric approach of North America. For our family, it's not even a question: we think the Dutch approach is far superior. In 2018, the Frans Halsbuurt neighbourhood in De Pijp, Amsterdam was make parking-free. Street parking for cars was removed and turned into bicycle parking, gardens, playgrounds, loading zones, and handicapped parking. An underground parking garage was created for residents' and visitors' vehicles. The city of Amsterdam is planning a larger re-design of this neighbourhood, but this video shows the current state, one year after car parking was removed. Plants have started growing in the gardens and the bicycle parking is well used. More information is available her (in Dutch): https://www.amsterdam.nl/projecten/frans-halsbuurt/ The final implementation of the street will start in September 2020. Autoluw is a Dutch urban planning concept meaning "nearly car-free". It's put into use all over the country, and has resulted in some of the greatest urban environments I've ever been to. This video explores the concept of autoluw, and how it is applied to Dutch streets, along with some examples from some foreign cities as well, such as Toronto and Copenhagen. I also talk about what Amsterdam has done to move towards the autoluwe stad, and briefly mention Agenda Amsterdam Autoluw. There is so much to talk about on this subject! I definitely plan a follow-up video on different aspects of where autoluw principles are applied. If you're interested in such things, make sure you subscribe! Time to get excited about SIDEWALKS! The Netherlands does a lot to ensure a safe environment for pedestrians and cyclists, but the one that stands out the most for me is continuous sidewalks. This video explores the basic concept of these safer sidewalks that are used everywhere in the Netherlands, but extremely rare (or poorly implemented) in other countries. This is an important part of the sustainable safety / vision zero efforts of the Netherlands to make streets safer for vulnerable road users. (Filmed pre-COVID-19) Cycling to IKEA is (trivially) easy in Amsterdam, and cycling infrastructure in the suburbs is actually better - and safer - than near the city centre. But while that may be common in the Netherlands, it's very uncommon elsewhere, and it has knock-on effects that increase car traffic and limit the options to people in the city. I definitely prefer the Dutch approach here. Patreon: https://patreon.com/notjustbikes Twitter: https://twitter.com/notjustbikes Reddit: https://reddit.com/r/notjustbikes This video was not sponsored by IKEA. They actually got pretty upset that I was filming there. ;) ... also, this was filmed before the COVID-19 outbreak in the Netherlands, so that wasn't a concern (or a reason for the light traffic). This is my first video that was filmed completely in 4k at 50 frames per seconds (exported to 1080p). That should hopefully eliminate the lighting artifacts that I was having with my GoPro on previous videos, as well as to provide a more "real life" feeling. Rotterdam is a city very different from any other in the Netherlands. This video explores what Rotterdam is like today, and what the city is doing to undo some of the damage caused by decades of car-centric policy. Want to support Not Just Bikes? I was always told, growing up, that the suburbs (of Canada) are a good place to raise children. But I've come to appreciate the importance of independence for the a child's development, something that's nearly impossible in today's car-dependent suburbs. It was pretty clear that suburbia was not right for our kids, so we moved to the Netherlands instead. The Netherlands has some of the best bicycle infrastructure in the world, but some of it is completely invisible ... until you learn about ontvlechten. Dutch cities take care to separate or "disentangle" routes taken by drivers from those taken by everyone else, making their streets safer, quieter, and more efficient. These routes are determined by hoofdnetten (and plusnetten), where each form of traffic gets its own routes through the city. I am not a "cyclist", but I do ride a bicycle almost every day ... along with hundreds of other people who are also not "cyclists". One thing I really appreciate about the Netherlands is that there is no stigma or group dynamics to riding a bicycle. There's no "bicycle culture" in the Netherlands, just like there's no "shoe culture" for people who walk where you live. It's just another option that you can use if it's more convenient (and it often is, due to properly designed road infrastructure). When talking about bicycle infrastructure in Canada, the number one excuse I hear is "winter." Many Canadians see the cold and snow as a fundamental barrier to year round cycling. But one city, Oulu in Finland, with winter weather worse than most Canadian cities, shows that winter cycling has nothing to do with the weather, and everything to do with safe cycling infrastructure. Want to learn more about winter cycling? This is a bit of a repeat for long-time viewers to the channel, but I wanted to share again the best part of pedestrian infrastructure in the Netherlands: continuous sidewalks. These sidewalks are much safer and more comfortable, as they do not require pedestrians to drop down to street level, and it ensures that drivers slow down before crossing paths with pedestrians. If there's one piece of Dutch street design that your city should copy today, it's continuous sidewalks. My original full-length video about continuous sidewalks is here: https://youtu.be/9OfBpQgLXUc #shorts
"Coventry - The City That Nearly Forgot The Bicycle" This special guest video was produced by Adam Tranter, the Bicycle Mayor for Coventry, in the UK. Coventry holds an important place in the history of the bicycle. It is the city where both the penny-farthing, as well as the safety bicycle - the template for almost all modern bicycles - was invented. In this short documentary, Adam explains the history of cycling in Coventry, and about the realities of cycling in Coventry today. Comparisons to Amsterdam and the Netherlands are provided. This film will be shown as part of the Coventry Transport Museum's new exhibition Gearing Up: From Saddle to Spoke online on Friday 12 March 2021. The exhibition (https://culturespacecoventry.com/gearing-up) – which it is hoped will open physically when the museum reopens – features over 80 cycles and celebrates the history, unique designs, and benefits of cycling. In many US and Canadain cities you really only have two choices for living: an apartment/condo, or a single family home. The housing options in-between these two extremes - called "Missing Middle Housing" - has been legislated almost out of existence in the US and Canada. Now many cities are starting to doubt these regulations and are (slowly) undoing the car-centric mistakes of the past. For centuries, cities used to be built incrementally. Improving and building on successful places, and changing or abandoning unsuccessful places. This changed in America in the 1940s, when whole neighbourhoods were built on the edge of town, to a completed state. After several generations, many of these places are financially insolvent, but are propping themselves up with an ever-growing mountain of debt. Stroads are streets that are designed like roads and in doing so, fail at being good at either one. They are too sprawling and hostile to be good streets, and they are too busy and complicated to be good roads. Stroads are inefficient, unsafe, expensive, and ugly. This video introduces the concept of Stroads, and talks about why you will (almost) never find these kind of places in the Netherlands: because here all roads need to have a single purpose as either a motorway, connector road, or end-destination street. The name "stroad" was invented by Strong Towns as a way to explain why road design in the US is fundamentally broken. Car-dependent suburbs suck. But that doesn't mean that all suburbs suck. It is possible to build suburbs that don't suck, and the US and Canada used to design great suburbs all the time. But even though these pre-war suburbs are loved by many people, and in huge demand, they're illegal to build today. For about the last twenty years, my wife and I have had a pretty simple rule: if we don't need to drive to work, we don't need to own a car. We applied this even in car-centric places by taking advantage of carshare services. People don't seem to understand just how easy modern carshare services have become, which is too bad, as they would benefit almost everyone. Urban noise is a common problem, and the vast majority of it is created by motor vehicles. Noise is far too often dismissed as a minor nuisance, rather than the legitimate health issue that it is. The book "Curbing Traffic" has a chapter about the health impacts of noise pollution. I explore the research in the book, and visit Delft, the city that is highlighted in the book as being a shining example of what can happen when noise pollution is taken seriously. This video explores the problem that farting cars, farting motorcycles, and farting mopeds create in our cities. Why doesn't anybody cycle to the hardware store in Canada? In this collab with Shifter, we take the basketball game of "plus 1 minus 2" and bring it to urban cycling, as a way of comparing a similar ride between cities. Unsurprisingly, it sucks to cycle to a suburban hardware store in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. But how much does it suck? And how does cycling to the suburbs compare between Calgary and Amsterdam? Speed limits are important to keep our roads and streets safe but how are they decided? And what happens when a speed limit is set too high or too low? There are right and wrong ways to set our speed limits, and design our streets, but unfortunately North American traffic planners are firmly stuck in the 20th century when it comes to building safe streets. Commuter rail is a rail system designed to bring people from the suburbs into a central business district for work. But is it really an efficient transit system, or just another subsidy provided to car-dependent suburbanites? This video explores commuter rail in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), the train system known as "GO Transit."
ast summer, we took advantage of the international travel ban, and visited Giethoorn, in the Netherlands, while it was (relatively) free of tourists. Giethoorn is an interesting autoluw (nearly car-free) town, where the primary mode of transportation is by boat. This video explores some of Giethoorn, and the thing that make it so unique.

While we were in Switzerland in May, we took the opportunity to travel on the "Slowest Express Train in the World", the Glacier Express. This is a scenic train that travels between the Alpine towns of Zermatt and St. Moritz, in Switzerland.
The Glacier Express travels between the Swiss Alpine towns of Zermatt and St. Moritz. Only one of these towns is car-free however, and wow, what a difference that makes! This video compares these two tourist towns, and it really shows the difference that it makes to restrict personal vehicles. I've been to a lot of cities around the world and I've discovered a kind of "Universal Law of Cities": the less car-friendly a place is, the nicer it is to be there. This is very apparent when comparing Zermatt to St. Moritz.
When I was in Montréal I was fortunate enough to cycle around for a day with one of the engineers who designed much of their recent bicycle infrastructure. In this video, I show what it was like to cycle in Montréal from a camera attached to my backpack.
Amsterdam needed to close a 90-year old historic bridge for for almost 4 months for necessary renovations. But they closed it to cars ... and built a whole new temporary bridge, just for bikes.
There's a trend towards lower speed limits in cities all over the world, but why is this happening? What is the research behind it? And what is the "correct" speed limit for cities, anyway?
Nearly 3 million people pass through Shinjuku Station every day, which is an insane number. But despite the massive number of people transported, the area around Shinjuku supports some great urbanism, with vibrant street life and lots of independent shops and restaurants.
Japan is famous for its trains. And for good reason. They’re fast. And frequent. And clean. With so many train companies trying to differentiate themselves, the Japanese have created some crazy trains that just don’t exist anywhere else.
Why Japan's small, urban streets are the key to it's livability.
Are the changes Taiwan is making to it's road infrastructure working for or against pedestrian and bike traffic?
I needed to get from New York to Toronto. So of course, I took the train. For 12½ hours.
The Not Just Bikes YouTube channel was launched just over a year ago, with the upload of "What Makes a City Great?" in October of 2019.
