We meet all the members of the Carson family. Godfrey reluctantly allows Jennifer to join Carson and Carson as a Solicitor. To the consternation of the family, Godfrey announces his engagement to Felicity Bryce, the widowed daughter of the influential Sir Humphrey Moore.
Jennifer becomes involved in a notorious child murder case. She pursuades Bill to undertake the defence of the accused, George Royston. There is an angry confrontation between Bill and Godfrey, when Godfrey hears this news.
Godfrey tries to manipulate Bill out of the Roystron trial - without success. Amy goes out with a young philanderer, Alan Manning, and discovers that Tommy is drinking heavily. The Royston trial begins and Arthur finds a witness in Ballarat who can supply an alibi for Royston. Bill flies to Ballarat to bring the witness back to Melbourne. On the way home the aeroplane crashes and the witness and Bill are killed.
Jennifer, shattered, tries to hold the family together. Godfrey takes over the funeral and thankfully passes the Royston defence back to the Crown Solicitor's office. Robert discovers that a large sum of money in Bill's safekeeping has vanished. After the funeral, Jennifer approaches Godfrey about the Royston defence. Angry at her interference, he tells her that Bill has apparently embezzled a large sum of money from a client. Furthermore, other sums have mysteriously disappeared without explanation from Bill's accounts. Jennifer's financial position is precarious.
Immediately after Bill's funeral, Jennifer, despite Godfrey's objections, decides to continue with the Royston case alone, gaining the support of Arthur. Tommy's political career starts to move and Gerard reports to Godfrey with more news about the missing money.
Jennifer, despite the continued objections of the Carson family, continues to fight but ultimately loses the Royston case. However, Arthur joins her business on a permanent basis and together they get their first client - Mrs Emily Talbot.
While she and Arthur continue to gather evidence for Mrs Talbot's case of fraud against Adrian Lonsdale, Jennifer cuts herself off from the Carson family by accepting Vic's proposal to move to his house. Amy continues her rather rocky relationship with Alan Manning, a friend of Tommy's. Robert, in an ill-timed move, tells Billy of his father's supposed guilt where the missing money is concerned.
Jennifer wins the Talbot case and after some family upset and Eileen's departure, begins to move to Vic's house. Gerard reports to Godfrey on the Alan Manning - Amy relationship and on Robert's gaffe to Billy. Amy is furious and Robert is berated by Godfrey. Taking advantage of Jennifer's departure, Margery successfully pushes for the purchase of Bill's house for Robert and herself.

The ramifications of Edgar's rumoured 'illness' are canvassed publicly and Edgar is put to the test at a dinner at Godfrey's in the presence of Sir Humphrey Moore. In effect he is forced to resign - leaving the way clear for Tommy to stand at the election. Sarah goes to stay at Godfrey's for a weekend and announces her intention to stay permanently.

Arthur copes with his father's displeasure when he learns Arthur has resigned from Carson and Carson and is working for Jennifer. Meanwhile Godfrey tries to get Arthur to rejoin the firm. Sarah decides she'd like to move in to the Godfrey Carson house on a permanent basis and Jennifer agrees to let her stay with her grandfather until the accommodation problems at Vic's have been resolved.
Arthur conducts Mrs Ward's custody case and wins a resounding victory when he breaks down the husband's evidence and proves him to be a violent drunkard. As a result of Arthur's involvement with the Ward case, he decides to stand up to his father and stay with Jennifer. Much to Arthur's surprise his father applauds the decision and says he will lend Jennifer and Arthur the money to set up properly in an office. Tommy's political career takes a step in the right direction when Tommy convinces Edgar Swann that he's the right man to take over Swann's parliamentary seat, and in a meeting at the local committee rooms, Tommy shows up well against his chief opponent in the pre-selection stakes. Sarah, while enjoying the luxury life at Godfreys, begins to miss the warm family atmosphere of life with Jennifer.

At a speaking engagement, Tommy meets Mrs Amelia Redman, with whom an instant attraction develops. Jennifer and Arthur set up their new office, and all seems set fair for the new firm of Carson and Simpson.
Madeline returns home after convalescing at the Carson house. Amy discovers that she prefers the hardworking, idealistic Dr. Conway over the young man-about-town Alan Manning. Felicity brings Sarah to visit Jennifer at her new office, and tells Jennifer she believes Sarah's on the point of deciding to return home. Thanks to Mrs Redman, Tommy is able to steal a march over his political rival, Major Dolman, and wins pre-selection for Edgar Swann's former seat. Robert and Margery reveal what seem like irreconcilable differences. Robert leaves home and checks into a private hotel.
Jennifer finds herself acting as an intermediary between Robert and Margery as well as between two parties involved in a fencing dispute. Margery comes to Robert's hotel and finds him with another woman.
Although nothing has been resolved in their domestic difficulties, Godfrey expects Robert and Margery to entertain an influential client in their house. Sarah becomes aware of just how hard her mother is working and finally decides to come home, but not before causing conflict for Amy in her relationship with Doctor Conway.
Robert realises that Margery is making herself physically ill with worry and returns to look after her. Meanwhile Felicity begins to doubt Godfrey's motives for postponing their wedding date and she has difficulty accepting that a man should be free to keep a mistress.

As Godfrey well knows and fears, the police have good reason to suspect Gerard but Gerard seems to be in the clear. Amy finds out that her father has instructed Gerard to keep Dr. Conway at bay. Jennifer presses Donnegan for the information which she believes is going to clear Bill's name. She also meets James Dolman, one of Tommy's competitors, and is impressed by his honesty and policies.
Jennifer continues to press Donnegan for the information regarding Bill and questions Tommy about his association with Donnegan. He wins the confidence of another gangland boss and arranges to have Donnegan's gang wiped out. Jennifer befriends Major James Dolman, Tommy's rival for the seat of Cameron and despite Godfrey's bitter objections, the two become close friends.
