(b/w) The first mission for the 101st US Airborne Division was the airborne landing in the Normadie on June 5, 1944. The aim was to parachute 6,700 soldiers behind the German lines in order to weaken the defense of the planned sea landing as much as possible. Due to large anti-aircraft defense, the soldiers were distributed across the whole of Normadie and there were great casualties - many were killed by parachute during the landing from German defense fire.
(b/w) The second major operation for the 101st US Airborne Division was Operation Market Garden, September 1944. The aim was to secure the roads west of the German border on the Rhine against German troops, so that Allied armored units could travel freely to Germany would have. However, the German resistance was greater than expected, so that after eight days the operation had to be canceled and a total of 2,110 soldiers from the Airborne Division were killed.
(b/w) Even after the missions in Normandy and the Netherlands, the U.S. fought Airborne at the forefront with. In December 1944, 12,000 men went to the Battle of Bastogne and were encircled there. Then we went to southern Germany and back to the French Mourmelon, where we trained for a possible jump over Berlin.
