Outward Bound

James pursues Charlotte and Burgess to Cyprus where he exposes the young captain's interest in his daughter as being purely mercenary,persuading a despairing Charlotte to return home with him. Samuel is smitten by charming actress Helen Doyle and she too is fond of him whilst accepting that her father Fergus is using Samuel's acquaintance to get Sarah to finance his new play. Samuel is saddened when the Doyles' touring company moves on and makes it clear to the returning Charlotte that their marriage is over. Marston is keen to marry Elizabeth and is angry when his father approaches her asking his help in finding a wife for his son.

Charlotte attól tart, hogy apja rátalál, de Burgess kapitány megnyugtatja. Egyébként James Onedin valóban mindenütt keresteti leányát. Eközben Samuel Onedin, kijózanodva egy fiatal színésznő ágyában ébred. Kiderül, hogy előző este egy színházban alaposan felöntött a garatra. James nem repes az örömtől, hogy neje csaknem luxus árvaházat hozott létre leendő védenceinek. Samuel bemutatja a családjának Mr. Fergus Doyle-t és színésznő leányát, Helent. Eközben a leányát kereső James Onedin Ciprus irányába veszi az útját és rátalál a szökevényekre. Burgess már harmadik napja rostokolt egy kikötőben egy beígért szállítmányra várva, de úgy tűnik, becsapták. Kiderül, hogy a csapdát James állította a kapitánynak.
