Matt Harvey kommt mit einer verdorbenen Ladung Dosenfleisch zurück. Isabel ist wütend, Matt soll nicht mehr für sie fahren. Robert möchte ein angrenzendes Gebäude kaufen, das der Salt Reederei gehört. Der angebliche Besitzer Sinclair aber will nicht verkaufen, obwohl er in Schwierigkeiten ist. James ist plötzlich an der Firma Salt interessiert. Er findet heraus, daß Sinclair nur der Erbe ist. Außerdem ist er hoch verschuldet. Der wirkliche Besitzer ist die alte, bettlägerige Mrs. Salt. James kauft alle Schuldscheine Sinclairs auf und stellt ihn vor die Wahl: Verkauf oder Ruin. James bekommt die Linie und das für Robert interessante Gebäude. Außerdem hat er Matt Harvey eingestellt. Er hilft zwar Isabel, die Versicherung für das Dosenfleisch haftbar zu machen, aber Isabel kommt zu spät zum Hafen. Sie sieht nur noch Matt Harveys Schiff auslaufen.
James is anxious to buy the Salt Line, a fleet of six ships which seem to belong to a foppish dandy,Sinclair, who does nothing with them. In fact they are owned by his aunt,captain's widow Mrs. Salt,now old and bed-ridden but reluctant to sell as she has promised them to her nephew. James discovers that Sinclair has huge gambling debts,which he pays off in return for being given the ships. He and Sinclair go to see Mrs. Salt for her approval but she has died in her sleep and so James takes over the Salt Line,putting Captain Baines in charge of it.

A férfi örül, hogy ily módon minden gondja megoldódik, s teljesíti a kérést. Ezt követően James-szel együtt felkeresi nagynénjét, hogy benyújtsa lemondását, de a néni közben meghal. Ekkor Sinclair átruházza Jamesre a cég tulajdonjogát.
