James und Robert Onedin fahren auf der „Charlotte Rhodes“ nach Falmouth. Sie wollen ein Dampfschiff kaufen. Hinter dem ist auch Isabel her. Als sie ihren Bruder sieht, macht sie ein phantastisches Angebot, und James ist aus dem Rennen. Ihr Plan ist, das Angebot zu drücken, wenn James seines zurückgezogen hat. Mittlerweile ist Captain Baines auf dem Weg nach Southhampton auf ein Wrack gelaufen. Isabel, die mit dem Dampfer eine Probefahrt macht, bietet für viel Geld ihre Hilfe an. Captain Baines aber will sich nicht helfen lassen. Die „Charlotte Rhodes“ ist nicht versichert, und Baines will seinem Reeder die Riesensumme ersparen. Isabel hat das Dampfschiff gekauft, weil sie an der Bergungsarbeit verdienen wollte. Die Rettung aus Baines’ Dilemma bringt eine Kirchenglocke, die sich unter der Ladung befindet. Sie wird als Taucherglocke benutzt, und der Zimmermann sägt den Mast durch, in dem die „Charlotte Rhodes“ hängt. Isabel geht leer aus.
Elizabeth and Matt are in Falmouth to buy a tug,the 'Alice',which she wants to turn into a ferry but James arrives with Robert,also interested in the boat,hopeful for a quick deal and departure. However the 'Charlotte Rhodes' gets stuck on a submerged wreck. Elizabeth buys the tug and offers to pull the 'Charlotte Rhodes' clear but,as James let the insurance lapse,he would be unable to claim the expense and finally the ship is floated off,thanks to the underwater skills of its carpenter.Matt,however, is annoyed that again Onedin places cost-cutting over the risk to human life.
Elizabeth úgy dönt, megveszi a kis Alice vontató gőzöst, s ehhez Matt Harvey segítségét kéri. A hajó eddigi tulajdonosának felajánl 5000 fontot arra az estre, ha a hajó a nyílt tengeren is megfelel majd a várakozásoknak. Az asszony azt tervezi, az új szerzeményét átalakíttatja utasszállító komphajóvá. Időközben a Charlotte Rhodes zátonyra futott. Kiderül, hogy a hajó biztosítása indulás előtt lejárt és James nem kötött rá újat, mert ahhoz az immár tíz esztendős járművet fel kellene újítani és a biztosítás kétszer annyiba kerülne. Ezért most bajban van, már csak azért is, mert az "Alice" 300 fontot kérne a zátonyról történő levontatásért. Baines kapitány szerint azonban a dagály ingyen is levontatja.
