Charles, Hubert and Jenny are reunited with Agnes, who has become separated from Greg. They visit the Walter's family farm, where Greg and Agnes met Tom Walter and his family some months ago. However, the farm is deserted as Tom' mother, Edith, and her sons Steve and Owen were driven from it, when Tom was away, by former butcher Brod, to a camp by a railway line. Charles, Jenny, Agnes and Hubert are captured and taken there as well. Brod has special plans for Jenny and sees Charles as a threat to his position...
Mentre prosegue da sola nella sua ricerca, Jenny si imbatte in un branco di cani. Charles giunge appena in tempo per salvarla. Mentre Charles rimprovera Jenny per essersi allontanata da sola, arriva Agnes, che viene accolta con grande gioia. Hubert vorrebbe tornare subito a Challoner, ma Charles è dell'idea di proseguire per Lichfield, dove spera di incontrare Greg. Agnes propone di passare la notte alla fattoria di Tom Walter, una comunità molto efficiente che lei e Greg visitarono qualche mese prima, ma quando il gruppo arriva sul posto lo trova deserto e infestato dai topi. Cercando del cibo, il gruppo si imbatte in un maiale in trappola. Charles sta per sparargli, ma due uomini lo fermano, dichiarando che quello è il loro territorio.
