Doktor uvízne v programu simulátoru a začne si myslet, že on je skutečný, kdežto posádka Voyageru jsou pouhé hologramy. Doktor věří, že Kes je jeho žena. Poprvé se ve Voyageru objeví postava poručíka Barclaye.

Böse Überraschung für den Doktor: Durch einen roten Alarm aktiviert, findet er die Voyager verlassen vor. Lediglich B Elanna und Captain Janeway blieben nach einem Angriff der Kazon verletzt zurück. Da taucht plötzlich Lieutenant Barclay auf der Krankenstation auf und behauptet Unglaubliches: Angeblich sei das bisherige Leben des Doktors nur eine Simulation auf dem Holodeck gewesen.

Stardate: 48892.1 When the Doctor is activated during a Red Alert, he learns that the ship has been abandoned, and that only B'Elanna Torres and an injured Captain Janeway are left on board. Soon afterwards, Lt. Barclay appears and tells him that his entire time on Voyager is an elaborate simulation, and he's really a holo-engineer by the name of Zimmerman on Jupiter station in the Alpha Quadrant, who has been trapped on a holodeck for six hours. If he does not destroy Voyager's warp core and end the program soon he will die.

Per far fronte all'emergenza, viene attivato un sistema di proiezione olografica remota per permettere al Dottore di uscire dall'infermeria e soccorrere i superstiti a bordo della nave.
