Episode 1 is all about the first day "on site." We have to find existing infrastructure, position the home on the site, mark and square up the foundation and set reference pins, dig the footings, set grade pegs, and install steel in the footings.
In Episode 2 we pour the concrete footings and build the block foundation that will be the form for the slab. The next steps will be forming the concrete porches, installing the slab plumbing, and doing the gravel and vapor barrier for under the slab. There is tons of great information about how (and why) we are doing these processes the way we are. These videos paint a very real picture of what it is like to on the job with our crew for the day! We also check out an old bus on the property to see if it would be a good candidate to be converted into a cool camper.
In Episode 3 we do the slab plumbing (drain and supply lines), form up the outdoor patio slabs, and add washed 57 stone to the foundation. We also test out our mud tires, check out some new video equipment, and take a fun trip down to the local hardware store! There is tons of great information about how (and why) we are doing these processes the way we are. These videos paint a very real picture of what it is like to on the job with our crew for the day!
In Episode 4 we do the final prep work for the pouring the slab, or so I thought! This includes compacting the #57 washed stone, tying steel, and adding a code approved vapor barrier. I also dive into the things I’ve been doing in the background to keep this project on schedule for the next few months. This includes ordering the windows and Trusses.
In Episode 5 we do the "actual" final prep for the slab, by forming a recessed area for a curb-less tile shower. This was a change that the homeowner had made that i had totally forgotten about! We also pour the concrete slab and explain the placing and finishing processes, concrete mixture, and the reasons for control joints.
In Episode 6 we FINALLY get to start framing... this is the fun part for me. I love seeing one of our designs come to life day by day as we build. We will be building the first floor walls, and as always sharing some techniques that have saved us time and also some technical info on the structure of these walls. We also build the BIG window wall on the high side of the single pitch roof, and this is one that has been on my mind for a while due to its size and weight.
In Episode 7 we frame the gable end walls, interior walls, and assemble the second floor system that will make the loft area of the home. We also set 8x8 posts and LVL girders to carry the roof system out over the covered patio, and this space turned out awesome! And of course we tell you all about the problems we run into... and on this episode we had one of the craziest OOPS moments ever!
In Episode 8 we finally build the roof system to get this home “in the dry.” Unfortunately, to do this we have to battle wet weather! We are using parallel cord engineered roof trusses that are full span from exterior wall to exterior wall. In this episode we also build the overhangs, install the sub-facia, do the roof sheathing and underlayment!
In Episode 9 we finish the last bit of framing, including the wall connecting the first and second floor roofs and the small roof over the master bathtub. For this section we "stick frame" instead of using engineered trusses. There is charts in the code book and on the American Wood Council web site (or app called SpanCalc) that detail allowable spans for different type materials.
In Episode 10 we finish drying in this structure by installing the Andersen windows! This includes a description and steps of the method we use for installation (there are many ways you could do this). We also install the finished facia boards and finished soffit, which includes a venting system for the roof.
On Episode 11 Jaime, Erik, and the Perkins Crew start the exterior finish of this home by processing, pre-finishing and install all of the corner boards, door trim and window trim. We also install the french doors and take a trip down to the local paint store to do some color testing for a faux wood finish on our Smart Side Shake panels.

On Episode 17 we tackle the wood accent walls! BUT... to get this project going, we first have to sift through the stacks of wood at our shop and find the best material. Jaime has been collecting wood since he was a teenager, and in fact scored a new stack of white oak just yesterday as a barter for cleaning out someones barn! In this case we decide to go with a hard maple.

On Episode 19 we install a heat mat for the tile in the master bathroom... twice! Turns out you have to buy a heat mat with the exact square footage you need, with no overage! Next, we grout the mat down and set the locations for the floor transitions in the doorways... very important step!
On Episode 20 we build the tile shower from start to finish! This includes framing, shower pan, liner, walls, waterproofing, tiling, and grouting.
