Tom erwacht in einem Krankenhausbett. Bevor er realisiert, was mit ihm passiert ist, steht seine Frau Alyson an seinem Bett. Sie erzählt ihm, daß er einen Autounfall hatte und drei Monate im Koma lag. Tom kann kaum glauben, daß alle seine Erlebnisse der letzten Monate Alpträume gewesen sein sollen. Eine Woche später wird Tom aus dem Hospital entlassen. Alyson bringt ihn nach Hause und erzählt ihm, daß seine Ausstellung demnächst eröffnet werden kann. Tom ist immer noch unsicher, ob sie ihm die Wahrheit erzählt und wem er überhaupt trauen kann. Schließlich sagt er Alyson auf den Kopf zu, daß sie ihn anlügt, vor allem, weil er sicher ist, daß er lediglich für drei Tage in dem Krankenhaus war. Doch bevor Alyson auf seine Vorwürfe antworten kann, erlebt Tom eine Überraschung: Sein bester Freund Larry Levy betritt das Haus. Das letzte Mal, als Tom Larry sah, lag er tot in seinem Badezimmer, umgebracht von Agenten der Organisation. Tom ist völlig durcheinander. Er stellt Larry einige Fragen, die nur der echte Larry beantworten kann. Larry besteht den Test, und Tom muß sich der Frage stellen, ob seine Erlebnisse der letzten Monate wirklich nur Alpträume waren...
Tom Veil wakes from a coma to hear the unsettling news that he was in a bad car accident months earlier and his ordeal of identity erasure was just a terrible nightmare. At his bedside is his ever-loving wife Alyson and his best friend Larry Levy, a man Veil swears he once saw dead and stuffed in a closet. Larry, who insists that he's been alive and well living in South America for the past nine months, tries to assure Veil that everything the doctors and Alyson told him about his hospitalization is true. Eventually trusing his old buddy, Veil pleads with Larry to believe his story and help protect him from the enemy. Meanwhile, his lab assistant plans for another showing of Veil's photographic art—with the centerpiece photo entitled "Displaced."
