Die Scoobies haben eine schwere Zeit, denn seit Buffy Sunnydale ohne ein Wort zu sagen verlassen hat, müssen die Freunde nun mit der alltäglichen Vampirbelastung fertig werden. Trotz Teamarbeit gelingt ihnen das nicht allzu gut. Nun fängt die Schule wieder an, und nicht nur Willow fragt sich, wo Buffy nun ist und was sie gerade tut. Buffy ist gar nicht so weit weg - es hat sie nach Los Angeles verschlagen, wo sie eine winzige Wohnung hat, sich als Kellnerin in einem schmierigen Café über Wasser hält und ihre Vergangenheit als Jägerin am liebsten vergessen möchte. Das klappt natürlich nur bedingt, denn im Café trifft Buffy eine alte Bekannte: Chantarelle, beziehungsweise Lily, wie sie sich nun nennt, gehörte letztes Jahr zur Gruppe der Vampiranbeter um Buffys Schulfreund Ford. Als Lilys Freund Rickie verschwindet, wendet sich das Mädchen verzweifelt an Buffy. Die ist zwar nicht begeistert, verspricht aber, sich darum zu kümmern. Buffy wird auch bald fündig - doch die Leiche, die sie findet, ist zwar eindeutig die von Rickie, allerdings rund 80 Jahre alt. Irgendetwas geheimnisvolles geht vor sich, und die Blutspendestelle, bei der viele der Ausreißer öfter Plasma spenden, scheint darin verwickelt zu sein...
Willow, Xander and Oz are attempting to keep the Sunnydale vampire population in check during Buffy's absence with only moderate success. As the gang restarts school we learn that Buffy is working as a waitress in L.A. using the name Anne and trying to forget her old life. Buffy runs into Lily (formerly known as Chanterelle) and her boyfriend Rickie who quickly turns up missing. Buffy discovers Rickie dead but mysteriously aged to an old man. Continuing her investigation Buffy tracks down Ken (a social worker) and Lily and all three fall through a portal in the floor. They are in a demonic factory where the humans are slave labor. Back in Sunnydale the gang succeeds in staking a vampire though it's not exactly pretty. Meanwhile Buffy and Lily wake up in a cell and Ken explains they are in an alternate dimension where a hundred years passes before a day on Earth goes by. Buffy overcomes the guards with some help from Lily and leads her and the other slaves back to Earth.
