La commissaire Emma Colonna revient en Corse pour le premier anniversaire de la mort de son mari, originaire de l'île. Ce voyage introspectif prend rapidement une tournure dramatique lorsqu’un premier corps est retrouvé pendu sur les remparts de Calvi. La mise en scène rapelle étrangement une vieille légende insulaire, celle de « L’Impiccatu ».
Avec l’aide de son adjoint local, l’adjudant Christophe Lemestre, Emma doit naviguer entre son passé douloureux et l'enquête complexe qui s'annonce. Ensemble, le duo d’enquêteurs doit déjouer les non-dits de la population, les tensions entre clans et les pressions politiques, car chaque nouveau meurtre semble lié à un passé trouble que beaucoup préfèreraient oublier.
