After a bad day at work, Dan Bowker arrives home drunk to discover that his 15-year-old son, Alex, has not come home and no one knows where he is. Meanwhile, Trauma surgeon Jon Allerton is at home celebrating his birthday when, despite being off duty, he is called into work. Jon’s patient is Dan’s son, Alex; he has been stabbed. At the hospital, Dan is reassured by Jon, but when Jon is unable to save Alex, Dan can’t let go of the idea that the surgeon is responsible for the death of his son.
The pressure continues to mount on Jon when Dan gets a job in the hospital and is seemingly everywhere Jon turns. As Dan pursues the truth through official means - a complaint to the hospital and enlisting the help of the police - Jon decides to take matters into his own hands and tries to enlist the help of Dan’s wife, Susie. Meanwhile, unable to get what he perceives as justice from the authorities, Dan starts to unpick every aspect of Jon’s life.
Having been failed by the authorities, Dan takes matters into his own hands to get to the truth.
