Mitten im Hochsommer ist in ganz New York der Strom ausgefallen. Zunächst strömen die Menschen lediglich auf die Straße und nehmen die Situation gelassen, doch Sully glaubt, dass es nur eine Frage der Zeit ist, bis es zu ersten Ausschreitungen kommt. Seine Befürchtungen bestätigen sich, als der indische Ladenbesitzer Mr. Baboo, der sein Geschäft um jeden Preis vor Plünderern schützen will, auf einen stehlenden Jugendlichen schießt. Schnell hat sich eine Menschentraube gebildet, die Mr. Baboos Laden zu stürmen versucht. Sully und Davis haben alle Hände voll zu tun, den Ladenbesitzer und seine Familie vor der wütenden Menschenmenge zu schützen. Dennoch können sie nicht verhindern, dass die Situation eskaliert und es zu schweren Unruhen kommt.
Auch Carlos und Doc haben durch den Stromausfall jede Menge zu tun - und als sie nach der Behandlung des lungenkranken Mr. Jacobs dessen Haus verlassen, steht auch noch ihr Rettungswagen in Flammen. Wie sich herausstellt, war der Motor überhitzt, weil Carlos die Klimaanlage permanent hatte laufen lassen. Fred und Faith sind unterdessen in einem Fahrstuhl eingeschlossen. Sie versuchen schon seit Stunden, Hilfe herbeizurufen, als Fred plötzlich einen Herzinfarkt erleidet...
When a blackout strikes the city during a heat wave, Sully prophetically warns the more optimistic Ty that trouble in the streets will swiftly ensue. After Carlos leaves the ambulance running to keep the bus cool while he and Doc are on calls, the engine catches fire and the ambulance is destroyed. A wealthy old man confined to his bed by illness offers them a large amount of money to stay with him until his daughter arrives. Doc insists that they leave to treat others more in need over the protests of Carlos. Bosco arrests a young man, Latrell Griffith, and faces a difficult decision when an immigrant shop owner shoots and wounds a teenage shoplifter. After Latrell uses his training as a medic to save the boy, a riot breaks out and Bosco, Latrell and the shoplifter barely escape. Nightfall brings more unrest as the nervous cops try to keep the peace. Faith and Fred are stuck in a elevator when the power goes out. Carlos lascia l’ambulanza col motore acceso per l’aria condizionata mentre lui e Doc sono impegnati in una chiamata, il motore prende fuoco e l’ambulanza è distrutta. Bosco arresta un giovane, Latrell Griffith, e fa fronte a una decisione difficile quando un negoziante spara e colpisce un giovane rapinatore. Latrell è un medico e cerca di salvare il ragazzo, scoppia la rivolta e Bosco, Latrell e il rapinatore scappano. All’imbrunire iniziano le agitazioni e la polizia prova a mettere pace. Faith e Fred sono in ascensore quando va via la corrente. Faith cerca di calmare Fred, preso dall’ansia per essere intrappolato, e viene preso da un attacco cardiaco.
