The morning of June 22 brings terrible news about the war. When the fascists enter the city, Barashkov finds himself in the contingent from which the occupiers recruit “their” people. People who were unreliable and offended by the Soviet regime became their henchmen. German officers count on the assistance of the repressed. Together with the traitor Sinichkin, he is sent to a concentration camp to identify communists and Soviet activists. Then they drive him into the forest to send the provocateur Kovalchuk to the partisans. But Avdeich cannot act contrary to his conscience. No matter how much his country offends him, he will not help those who “came and ruined everything here.” He is one of those who clearly separates Power and Homeland.
“This house, Barashkov’s well, you, Lida, your parents - this is my Motherland,” Avdeich says to Tima, his granddaughter’s fiancé.
Утро 22 июня приносит страшное известие о войне. Когда в город входят фашисты, Барашков оказывается в контингенте, из которого оккупанты набирают «своих» людей. В прихвостни к ним шли люди неблагонадежные и обиженные советской властью. Немецкие офицеры рассчитывают на содействие репрессированного. Вместе с предателем Синичкиным его отправляют в концлагерь опознавать коммунистов и советских активистов. Потом загоняют в лес, чтобы заслать к партизанам провокатора Ковальчука. Но поступать не по совести Авдеич не может. Как бы ни обидела его страна, он не станет пособничать тем, кто «пришёл и всё здесь испоганил». Он из тех, кто чётко разделяет Власть и Родину.
