Hiroshi Kuzumi and his wheelchair-bound younger sister Mana Kuzumi arrive in the town of Jōga. As they and their father are moving into their new apartment, Hiroshi meets Isuzu Tsumuhana, a tomboyish girl who lives next door and immediately latches onto him, proclaiming her love. At school, Hiroshi is warmly welcomed by everyone except class president Nemuru Kushinada, who tells him that his very existence is annoying. Later, Hiroshi learns from Isuzu and her friend Kaname that Jōga is known for its hassaku oranges, and that the harvest festival to the wolf god of the town is near. Hiroshi also notices the old district of Jōga, though Isuzu warns him to stay away from it.
昭和58年夏、山間の「嫦娥町」に引っ越した九澄博士。 目立つ存在ではない彼を、クラスメイトはやけに歓迎した。だが、クラス委員長の櫛名田眠だけは「貴方の存在は、迷惑なの」と言う。呆然とする博士だが…。
Hiroshi Kuzumi y su hermana menor en silla de ruedas, Mana Kuzumi, llegan a la ciudad de Jōga. Mientras ellos y su padre se mudan a su nuevo apartamento, Hiroshi conoce a Isuzu Tsumuhana, una chica poco femenina que vive al lado e inmediatamente se aferra a él, proclamando su amor. En la escuela, Hiroshi es bienvenido por todos, excepto por el presidente de la clase, Nemuru Kushinada, quien le dice que su misma existencia es molesta. Más tarde, Hiroshi se entera de Isuzu y su amiga Kaname que Jōga es conocida por sus naranjas hassaku, y que el festival de la cosecha del dios lobo de la ciudad está cerca. Hiroshi también se da cuenta del antiguo distrito de Jōga, aunque Isuzu le advierte que se mantenga alejado de él.
