Am 24. März 1999 geriet im Tunnel der Motor eines belgischen LKWs in Brand. Vermutet wird als Ursache eine weggeworfene Zigarettenkippe, die den Luftfilter des Volvo FH12 entzündet haben könnte. Begünstigt durch seine Ladung, bestehend aus Margarine, und durch verstärkte Lüftung in der Röhre nahm der Brand katastrophale Ausmaße an. Der Fahrer des Lasters konnte den Flammen entkommen, nicht aber die Insassen vieler hinten auffahrender Fahrzeuge. Der Brand konnte erst 53 Stunden nach Ausbruch unter Kontrolle gebracht werden. Bei dem Brand starben 39 Menschen.
