Sapphire succeeds in making contact with the darkness at a great personal risk. Steel negotiates with it by promising a powerful source of resentment in exchange for a return to present day. The solider finally reveals what it is the darkness has promised all the ghosts but Steel gives them a better offer. The darkness follows through with its part of the bargain and Sapphire and Steel must uphold their part as well, even if their actions damage time itself.
Tully è fuggito. Acciaio non è convinto che l'Oscurità se ne sia davvero andata e chiede a Zaffiro di mettersi in contatto con lei. Anche se spaventata, Zaffiro accetta di prestarsi all'esperimento e permette che l'Oscurità penetri nella sua mente, così che Acciaio possa parlarle direttamente e siglare un accordo. L'Oscurità si mostra interessata alla proposta di Acciaio, ma minaccia di spegnere per sempre la mente di Zaffiro se lui tenterà di imbrogliarla. Finalmente libera, Zaffiro intuisce il terribile patto che Acciaio ha stretto con l'Oscurità, un accordo agghiacciante che vorrebbe rifiutarsi di mettere in atto, ma si rende conto che probabilmente è l'unica soluzione possibile e accetta di riportare indietro il tempo, a quando l'Oscurità regnava ancora sulla stazione...
