Im Jahr 200 nach Christus bricht der Vulkan Taupo aus. 20.000 Kubikmeter Asche verteilen sich über die neuseeländische Nordinsel und der schon einige Tausend Jahre zuvor entstandene Kratersee vergrößert sich um ein Vielfaches. Historische Quellen berichten, dass sich damals sogar der Himmel über China und Rom tiefrot färbte. Im Zentrum der Nordinsel – auf dem sogenannten Zentralplateau – erheben sich gleich mehrere Vulkane. Ungeheure Kräfte sind am Werk und formen diese Landschaft. Das spektakuläre Plateau diente auch als Kulisse für das Schattenreich „Mordor“ bei der Verfilmung des „Herr der Ringe“-Epos. (Text: arte)
We cross from the South to the North Island, flying over Cook Strait and the capital city - Wellington - to the centre of the North Island. The Volcanic Plateau is located on the fault line defining the Pacific "rim of fire" and we view from above active volcanoes, bubbling mud pools and boiling geysers.
Le volcan de Taupo est entré en éruption au IIe siècle de notre ère. Vingt mille mètres cube de cendres se sont répandues sur l'île du Nord, agrandissant considérablement le périmètre du lac de cratère constitué des milliers d'années auparavant.
