This film focuses on the difficulty Vietnam veterans have had dealing with the psychological impact of their tour of duty. The tape is structured mainly around footage of a roomful of veterans discussing their experiences with each other, cutting to other interviews with veterans at times, or having them narrate the stories behind gruesome war photographs. It was filmed in New York in May 1981.

"Cocaine Express" is a short documentary about the experiences of photographer Henry Herr Gill and writer Rick Soll, journalists for the Chicago Sun Times. They describe the details and enormous scale of the underground drug trade between the United States and nations in South America. The footage is mostly black and white photographic stills with Gill and Soll narrating. They trace their steps through different South and Central American towns, and talk about various characters and situations they encountered along the way.

Mayoral Commercials by Lynn Sweet. This tape collects many of the political ads from the 1983 race for mayor of Chicago. The ads are shown in approximately consecutive order. First there are the ads for the Democratic primary race between Jane Byrne, Richard M. Daley, and Harold Washington, followed by ads from the general election between Harold Washington and Bernard Epton. Many of the ads are smears, so it is interesting to see them in close succession responding to each other. Includes ad featuring Studs Terkel for Washington.

"Uptown Christian Soldiers" is a short, well-balanced documentary about Jesus People USA in Chicago's Uptown neighborhood. JPUSA offers emergency housing, long-term housing for disadvantaged persons, and a daily meal program. JPUSA also operates several small businesses in the neighborhood. Program features interviews from administrators, community members, former members, and the families of members. There is also footage from within the dining halls of the ministry and the dormitories bought by the church.

"Reclaiming America" is a short documentary about the American Agriculture Movement's 1985 protest in front of the Chicago Board of Trade. The protesters, family farmers, target futures trading and the speculative shorting tactics used in the financial system. 49 protesters were arrested over two days. Footage focuses on speeches from Wayne Cryts, president of the American Agricultural Movement.

Film made with the Kwakwaka'wakw Indians (also called the Kwakiutl) of British Columbia about their struggles to preserve their cultural heritage. As an introduction to the piece, Chuck Olin explains that the documentary was not made simply about the tribe from the point of view of an outsider, it was made with them and for their own use. The potlach was a fundamental part of the Kwakiutl's culture and economy. However, the Canadian government declared it illegal, and in the 1920s they interrupted a potlach held by this tribe and stole all of the tribe's important artifacts. The tape celebrates the return of these artifacts t o the tribe and the building of a cultural center to house them. The film also deals with the tribe's attempts to preserve their language and culture.

The video consists mostly of current interviews; some home movies and videos are shown throughout.

A highlight comes when Barry Romo, one of the founders of Vietnam Veterans Against the War, speaks to high schoolers about the gruesome realities of fighting in a war.

Annette Barbier and her daughter Celine went to India for four months in 1988. Her tape documents the everyday lives of village women and muses philosophically about the cultural differences. In an unusual touch, Barbier translates the conversation between villagers as she shoots, so we have a unique opportunity to understand how her presence with a video camera makes them feel.
Part of the Global Perspectives on War and Peace Collection. In December 1989, videomaker Andrew Jones was in Panama, working on a documentary about President Manuel Noriega. On the eve of the interview, the U.S. invaded Panama amid rising tensions between the two countries. The United States had been claiming the Noriega was a drug trafficker and dangerous to America. Jones spends time with the everyday Panamanians as well as Panamanian government officials, and as a result, becomes increasingly suspicious of the portrayal of the invasion by the U.S. government and media. The documentary includes powerful on the ground footage during the U.S. attack.

Documentary about an African American man named Michael Johnson, who works on the floor crew at United Center, the home of the Chicago Bulls. (The title refers to this connection between the subject and basketball star Michael Jordan.) Johnson struggles to make ends meet on a minimum wage job amidst the pomp and circumstance of the 1996 Democratic National Convention. Through his candid reflections, one sees the struggle of many workers across the country as they are faced with limited employment options, no benefits, and no room for advancement. Some of the original footage was used in a program called "None of the Above," which investigated Americas non-voters.
