In Episode #1, Hanazuki the Moonflower gets born on her moon and meets the Hemka and Little Dreamer. Moments after Little Dreamer gives Hanazuki her first treasure the Hemka have stolen it. As Hanazuki’s efforts to retrieve the treasure, escalate into chaos, she must consider whether there’s something more important than recovering this treasure that’s rightfully hers.
In Episode #2, Hanazuki accidentally flattens Blue Hemka and can’t figure out how to make him right again. She turns to Sleepy Unicorn in hopes of getting Sleepy to magically fix Blue, but Sleepy’s dark past with magic makes him reluctant to ever use magic again. When Hanazuki fails to get Sleepy’s help, Hanazuki reckons with the possibility that she has caused Blue irreparable harm.
In Episode #3, after tricking Hanazuki into leaving Yellow Hemka alone with her, Chicken Plant swallows him. Soon after discovering that Chicken Plant consumed Yellow, Hanazuki sees she swallowed Lime Green Hemka, too. Livid at this unrepentant Hemka-eater, Hanazuki must find a way to rescue any Hemka still inside Chicken Plant before it’s too late.
In Episode #4, frustrated with the Hemka for disrupting her new garden, Hanazuki vents to Mirror Plant and the Hemka overhear. Only later does Hanazuki realize they were merely trying to save her new garden from getting engulfed by the oncoming slow sand. While she tries to reconcile with the insulted Hemka, Pink Hemka gets trapped in slow sand and Hanazuki must inspire all the Hemka to follow her lead if Pink’s to be rescued in time.
In Episode #5, a much larger moon brushes too close and its powerful gravitational force pulls Lime Green Hemka off of Hanazuki’s moon onto it. Without hesitation, Hanazuki goes on a solo rescue mission to retrieve Lime Green, not fully recognizing how perilous this new moon might be. By the time Hanazuki does realize the danger she’s in, it looks like she could be trapped on that moon for good.
n Episode #6, Hanazuki’s efforts to protect Little Dreamer from the Hemka get much tougher when the Hemka discover the power of red treasure juice. After drinking it up they all become so feisty that Hanazuki’s unable to prevent them from taking Little Dreamer captive. Deciding to fight fire with fire, Hanazuki drinks the red treasure juice herself and things quickly spiral out of control.
In Episode #7, a Moonflower named Kiazuki crash lands her Spacesurfer on Hanazuki’s moon, and Hanazuki embraces this chance to finally make a friend more like herself. Kiazuki, however, seems more interested in learning all about Hanazuki’s power to grow Treasure Trees than in making new friends. Meanwhile, Kiazuki’s companion Zikoro intimidates the Hemka and when Hanazuki tries putting a stop to this the dynamic between her and Kiazuki takes a turn for the worse.
In Episode #8, initially thrilled to hear that Chicken Plant is having a baby, Hanazuki’s surprised to discover that everyone else finds this news terrifying. Despite ample warning of how destructive this baby might become, Hanazuki can’t resist being protective toward it until it begins destroying Treasure Trees. Suddenly, Hanazuki finds herself behind the curve trying to prevent a natural catastrophe.
In Episode #9, Hanazuki can’t get her friend Sleepy Unicorn to tell her why he seems so unsettled since Kiazuki arrived, but then his dreams begin to give him away. Hanazuki watches as Sleepy’s magic horn reveals his past by projecting holographic dream images while he sleeps, and after Sleepy awakens he flees to protect his secrets. Meanwhile, Kiazuki and Zikoro catch on to what’s happening and try convincing Hanazuki that Sleepy might be dangerous.
Hanazuki learns for the first time about the Big Bad and the danger it poses to all moons in this galaxy, and she hopes Kiazuki will teach her how to defend against it. Kiazuki, however, is so obsessed with growing her own treasure tree that she’s too distracted to focus on anything else. When Kiazuki decides her best chance of success is on the Dark Side of this moon and tells Hanazuki to come help her, Hanazuki hesitates: the Dark Side’s the one place Hanazuki’s been warned never to go.
When Hanazuki meets a lovable recluse on the Dark Side named Doughy Bunington, she learns he’s been exiled from the Light Side and convinces him to return with her. As Doughy suspected, however, none of Hanazuki’s friends are ready to forgive Doughy for a crime he inadvertently committed there long ago. Meanwhile, Hanazuki discovers that in her absence the Hemkas have exposed the moon to an immanent attack.
Aware that their first win against the Big Bad is likely only temporary, Hanazuki begins readying everyone for the next attack but the Hemkas are losing confidence. When they happen upon Kiazuki building an enormous Spacesurfer on which she plans to escape, the Hemkas help her to construct it in exchange for hitching a ride out of here. Devastated that the Hemkas are about to abandon her, Hanazuki prepares to give them a sad farewell.
When the Big Bad launches its worst attack ever, Hanazuki turns to Basil Ganglia the mastermind who helped Kiazuki devise her enormous Spacesurfer for help. Basil senses how badly Hanazuki needs his assistance and begins to milk this advantage for all it’s worth. Hanazuki’s appalled at this game of chicken he’s playing: is this guy really willing to put the whole moon at risk for his personal gain?
While teaming up with Hanazuki to protect everyone from a meteor shower, Dazzlessence Jones takes a blow to the head, and soon afterwards he begins bickering with the fallen meteors as though they’re his family. Meanwhile, Hanazuki looks on confused since these rocks don’t seem to be moving or speaking at all. When Dazzlessence tries getting Hanazuki involved in this family dispute, Hanazuki wonders if maybe he got hit on the head too hard.
The Moon Creatures’ attempt to treat Hanazuki to a relaxing day off goes haywire when Hanazuki leaves in search for Orange Hemka and winds up falling inside a volcano. Dazzlessence Jones and Sleepy Unicorn hesitate to go in after her because whoever dares to enter this particular volcano is forced to face whatever they fear most. They brave the Volcano of Fears anyway, seeing that it has paralyzed Hanazuki with her own fears, and now they’ll have to face their own.
Hanazuki and her friends find themselves facing two threats at once: a Mazzadril dangerously near their side of the moon, and the latest dreaded monster baby that Chicken Plant’s about to hatch. Hanazuki thinks there might be a way to turn these twin disasters to their advantage: if she and the Moon Creatures all lavish Chicken Plant’s baby with enough wonderful mothering, maybe they can win it over to their side in time to save them from the Mazzadril. No one else thinks this will work.
Zikoro’s more homesick for Kiazuki than ever, and Hanazuki wants to find some way to make Zikoro feel better without taking him all the way back to Kiazuki’s moon. She ignores Sleepy Unicorn’s warning that if things keep getting worse it might put Hanazuki’s own moon at risk. It’s not until Hanazuki sees for herself how Zikoro’s deteriorating condition has begun to affect the Hemkas that she realizes Sleepy may be right.
Hanazuki, Sleepy Unicorn and Zikoro are all taken captive on Sleepy’s home moon by Sleepy’s estranged brother Twisted Unicorn. Because Twisted conquered this moon long ago by using magic to overthrow this moon’s Moonflower, Sleepy wants no part of his brother and he questions Twisted’s motives for bringing them here. Nonetheless, Hanazuki holds out hope that Twisted’s claim to be reformed may be genuine, and that the brothers might reconcile if given a chance.
Kiyoshi, the deposed Moonflower of Sleepy Unicorn’s home moon, has been in hiding since Sleepy left long ago, and when Hanazuki succeeds in finding him she reunites the two old friends. Hanazuki tries convincing Kiyoshi to return to aid the unicorns of this moon, who need a champion to free them from servitude to Twisted’s Rainbow Dome. When Kiyoshi backs away from the challenge, Hanazuki decides to confront Twisted herself.
Soon after Hanazuki helps Kiyoshi escape to her own moon, Kiyoshi flees to the Dark Side to keep everyone else safe from Twisted Unicorn in case Twisted decides to come look for him here. Hanazuki organizes a manhunt for the elusive Moonflower, and after tracking him down she assures him that since they’re both Moonflowers they’re family, and that means they’re in this together. Twisted’s subsequent arrival instantly puts this commitment to the test.
Hanazuki learns that any magic used against Twisted Unicorn makes him more powerful. She remains determined to protect Kiyoshi, but her efforts of resisting Twisted are stymied when Dazzlessence Jones attempts to hand Kiyoshi over to him for the moon's protection, while Sleepy Unicorn tries to escort Hanazuki to safety. As he chases the Moonflowers, Twisted absorbs the juice of purple Treasure Trees and becomes even more formidable than ever before. The Moonflowers realize his susceptibility to treasure juice, so they pelt him with pink treasures that turn him overly sweet and sentimental, causing him to flee the moon in humiliation.
The Hemkas begin to worry that Hanazuki thinks Kiyoshi’s unicorns are way cooler than they are. When Hanazuki leaves to return Kiyoshi to his home moon, the Hemkas fret that if they don’t come up with some incredible way to prove themselves soon, Hanazuki might one day leave them for good. They settle on a way to impress her which winds up backfiring when Hanazuki returns sooner than expected.
While Hanazuki helps Kiyoshi resume being in charge as Moonflower of his own moon, Kiyoshi’s rebellious unicorns give him a difficult time. Fortunately, Zikoro’s also there to help, and since these unicorns respect Zikoro and follow his lead, Kiyoshi finally begins making headway. Unfortunately, Kiazuki’s moon appears in the sky, which sends Zikoro off kilter and Hanazuki must now help Kiyoshi control the damage as his progress unravels fast.
Hanazuki learns of an unexpected backstory between Kiyoshi and Kiazuki. After Kiazuki departs Kiyoshi’s moon with Zikoro, Hanazuki’s glad to be done with her, but Kiyoshi suspects something terrible may have happened to Kiazuki that they don’t know about yet. After Hanazuki agrees to check on Kiazuki as a favor to Kiyoshi, she sees for herself the devastation Kiazuki’s moon has suffered, and despite Sleepy Unicorn’s objections she looks for a way to help.
Imperiled by exploding moon debris while on their way back to Hanazuki’s moon, Hanazuki and Sleepy Unicorn are miraculously saved by a new Moonflower named Maroshi. After he helps them complete the journey back to her moon, Hanazuki’s gratitude turns to irritation when she thinks everyone’s happier to see Maroshi than her. It turns out easygoing Maroshi’s been hanging out on Hanazuki’s moon during her absence buddying up to her friends, and Hanazuki feels jealous.
After getting pummeled by exploded moon debris, Hanazuki’s treasure trees have been destroyed en masse, and just as the Big Bad capitalizes with another attack Kiazuki arrives with half a dozen treasure trees in tow. Kiazuki takes charge to make sure the trees get transplanted in time to repel the Big Bad. Meanwhile, Hanazuki looks after her Hemkas while trying to ignore the fact that Kiazuki only had these trees because she stole them from Hanazuki in the first place.
After finding Red Hemka on the Dark Side desperately weakened by Big Bad exposure, Hanazuki has no idea how to save him nor how bad the condition might get. Doughy Bunington’s the only one with any clue what to try, although he’s distressed it will necessitate a long journey and frets it won’t work anyway. Meanwhile, the rest of Hanazuki’s friends remain oblivious to Red’s situation since Kiazuki has them all waylaid on the Light Side to celebrate her first victory against the Big Bad.
Hanazuki plans a surprise party for Kiazuki, but Kiazuki is more interested in the mysterious and strange sound emanating from the portal.
The slow sand season arrives and Hanazuki discovers that Doughy was swallowed. Bravely, she goes underground and rescues Doughy from a manipulative plant called Depriva.
To the chagrin of Hanazuki, the two Hemkas rescued from Depriva prefer the company of Kiazuki. Then, he realizes that Kiazuki really needs them.
A new moon creature emerges and Dazzlessence takes care of it. The creature lost most of its mass on the trip. Hanazuki and Dazzlessence work to help him.
Hoping to make her new Moonflower friends feel at home on her moon, Hanazuki allows everyone to build their rooms. But she forgets to build her room.
Hanazuki discovers the origin of the portal. It is a danger signal from a distant moon. But Miyumi insists that nothing bad happens.
Hanazuki takes Kiazuki to a dance club on the Dark Side. Kiazuki can't enter it and says that she is not interested in going anyway.
Maroshi receives his first Treasure from Little Dreamer, but it doesn't activate. Hanazuki and Kiyoshi try to help him in vain, and discover that moods can not be forced.
