In this episode, we're exploring a box of Elvis' acetates with Angie Marchese, Graceland's Vice President of Archives & Exhibits. Acetate discs are a type of phonograph record that were widely used from the 1930's to 1950's for recording and broadcast purposes. Unlike ordinary vinyl records, acetates were made for special purposes like comparing different takes or mixes of a recording. If pressed vinyl copies of an impending new release were not yet available, acetates were used for getting preview copies into the hands of important radio disc jockeys.

June marks the anniversary of when Elvis was on set filming Jailhouse Rock in 1957, so we thought it would be fun to take a closer look at a very rare piece of history related to the movie!
In this episode, we're taking a closer look at items pertaining to Elvis' relationship with fashion designer and good friend, Bill Belew. In June of 1968, Elvis met Bill on the set of his upcoming TV special to go over costume ideas. He would then go on to make the black leather outfit and other items Elvis wore in the '68 NBC Comeback Special. Belew continued to design both on-stage and offstage wardrobe for Elvis throughout the 1970's. Among the most famous of Belew's Elvis jumpsuits are the American Eagle (created for the 1973 Elvis: Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite) and the Peacock (first worn at the Forum in Los Angeles in 1974, and later seen on the cover to the 1975 album Promised Land). He also designed the suit Elvis is wearing on the famous photo of President Nixon and him in the Oval Office, a velveteen outfit originally designed for Elvis to use in his Las Vegas shows.
