Der Kapitän Anton Lupan kommt um 1850 aus seiner rumänischen Heimatstadt an der Donau nach Port Said in Ägypten. Hier will er seine Kenntnisse im Schiffbau vervollständigen. Eines Tages wird er in eine Prügelei verwickelt. Pierre Vaillant, ein junger Franzose, kommt ihm zu Hilfe. Die beiden freunden sich an. Als Pierre erzählt, dass sein Vater während einer Expeditionsreise nach Feuerland verschollen ist, beschließen die beiden, gemeinsam den Vermissten zu suchen…
