Andy und Amanda wollen ihren Kindern bei einem gemeinsamen Abendessen erzählen, dass sie eine tiefe Freundschaft verbindet. Bevor es jedoch dazu kommt, deutet Delia vor Charlie bereits an, dass zwischen ihren Eltern etwas läuft. Charlie ist daraufhin so entsetzt, dass er sich in seinem Zimmer einschließt. Nicht nur deshalb beginnt Amanda nun wieder daran zu zweifeln, ob sie sich angesichts Johns Schicksal wirklich auf eine Beziehung mit Andy einlassen darf.
Jake, der mehr und mehr zu einem Ersatzvater für Sam geworden ist, lädt Nina zu einem Theaterbesuch ein. Kurz vorher macht Nina jedoch einen Rückzieher - mit der Erklärung, dass sie Sam die Enttäuschung ersparen möchte, ein zweites Mal verlassen zu werden. Unterdessen verweigert Hannah wegen ihres möglichen Gendefekts ein Treffen mit ihrem Verehrer. Sie will sich auf niemandem einlassen, da sie befürchtet, ihrem Partner stünde dasselbe Schicksal bevor wie ihrer Mutter, die seit Jahren aufopferungsvoll ihren an Huntington erkrankten Mann pflegt. Bright macht ihr jedoch klar, dass sie ihr Leben in die Hand nehmen muss, und Hannah beschließt, sich endlich auf Huntington testen zu lassen.
Andy and Amanda (guest-star Anne Heche) decide that it's time to tell Delia and Charlie (guest-star Shane Haboucha) about their relationship before they hear about it elsewhere, but Charlie's emotional reaction makes them question what they're doing. Meanwhile, when Hannah (Sarah Drew) doesn't jump at the opportunity to go on a date with a really cute guy, Topher, from school, Amy is convinced that Hannah is misguidedly saving herself for Bright.
Nina questions whether Sam (guest-star Jimmy Bennett) is going to be hurt again if her relationship with Jake (Scott Wolf) doesn't work out. Lastly, we flashback to Amanda (Anne Heche) and John earlier in their marriage of a more happier time with their son Charlie, right before he has his stroke.
Hannah è del tutto sorpresa quando un ragazzo a scuola le chiede di uscire, e quando Amy scopre della sua titubanza ad accettare l'invito, lei le dice di pensare ancora a Bright. Intanto Andy continua a vivere una situazione complessa con Amanda quando i due decidono di cenare insieme ai rispettivi figli e Charlie si arrabbia all'idea che la madre si frequenti con un altro uomo. Ricordando pezzi del triste passato familiare, la donna giungerà poi alla decisione di divorziare dal marito malato. Bright fa visita ad Hannah che, in un momento di confessioni, gli dice che ha paura di pensare al futuro visto che c'è il rischio che possa essere affetta dalla stessa malattia mortale che ha colpito suo padre. Mentre Bright le dà la spinta giusta per effettuare il test medico, Nina ha paura di approfondire la relazione con Jake quando si accorge che il figlio si sta affezionando a lui.
Andy y Amanda deciden que ya es hora de contarles a Delia y a Charlie lo de su relación, antes de que se enteren por terceras personas, pero la posible reacción de Charlie hace que se planteen lo que quieren hacer. Mientras tanto, Hanna no deja pasar la oportunidad de ir a una cita con Topher, el chico que de verdad le gusta, pero Amy piensa que Hanna se equivoca al alejarse de Bright. Nina se pregunta cómo le podría afectar a Sam si su relación con Jake no funcionara del todo bien.
