Adam Cartwright wird von zwei ausgebrochenen Sträflingen überfallen. Diese zwingen ihn, seine Kleidung gegen Gefängniskluft auszutauschen. Prompt greift ihn ein Suchtrupp auf. Niemand will ihm glauben, dass er kein flüchtiger Gefangener ist.
Ben, Joe and Adam travel to Bowleg to pay the yearly taxes on the Ponderosa. After the transaction is completed, Ben and Joe ride over the summit to join the cattle drive. Adam is on his way to Genoa and is carrying a $10,000 bank draft his father has given him. A prison guard rides into town and announces two hombres have broke out and escaped who are holdup men and killers. Elmer Trace and his partner Poindexter were assisted by a guard in escaping prison and they betray him on the trail. Trace takes his clothes, horse and firearms, leaving Poindexter with only a rifle and rides off. Meanwhile, the Sheriff of Bowleg organizes a posse immediately.
Ben, Joe y Adam viajan a Bowleg para pagar los impuestos anuales de Ponderosa. Una vez completada la transacción, Ben y Joe cruzan la cima para unirse al transporte del ganado. Adam se dirige a Génova y lleva consigo un cheque bancario de 10 000 dólares que le ha dado su padre. Un guardia de la prisión llega a caballo al pueblo y anuncia que dos hombres se han fugado, ambos atracadores y asesinos. Elmer Trace y su compañero Poindexter han contado con la ayuda de un guardia para escapar de la prisión y lo traicionan en el camino. Trace se lleva su ropa, su caballo y sus armas de fuego, dejando a Poindexter solo con un rifle, y se marcha. Mientras tanto, el sheriff de Bowleg organiza inmediatamente una partida de búsqueda.
