Cäsar hat nach jahrelangen Kriegszügen Gallien fast vollständig unterworfen. Nur Vercingetorix leistet noch Widerstand. Für kurze Zeit ist es dem "Barbaren" gelungen, die heillos zerstrittenen Keltenstämme Galliens zu einen und den Erfolg des Römers ernsthaft zu gefährden. Doch Cäsar schlägt den Kelten und ein anrückendes keltisches Entsatzheer in einer grandiosen Zweifronten-Schlacht. Der Gallische Krieg ist vorüber. Cäsars Ruhm als glänzender Feldherr eilt ihm von nun an voraus – und reicht bis in unsere Tage.
At the close of the Gallic Wars, Gaius Julius Caesar finds his army encircled by a massive force of Gauls but wins a decisive victory with a brilliant counterattack at the Battle of Alesia. An inspiring speech to his troops, promising to rescue Rome from its corrupt rulers and restore it to its people, raises opposition from Senators Cato and Marcellus. Caesar refuses to disband his army before crossing the Rubicon, plunging the Republic into civil war and turning his deputy Labienus and old friend Pompey against him. Caesar captures Rome unopposed after Pompey is forced to withdraw his vastly outnumbered legions and the senators and people flee.

V mnoha ohledech byla jeho krátká vláda úspěšná – ale dopustil se jedné velké neprozřetelnosti. Římská republika se totiž kdysi zrodila ze strachu, že by jí někdy vládl tyran. Principem proto bylo, že jednotlivec nesmí mít příliš velkou moc. Caesar se chtěl stát králem, ale tento plán ho zahubil. Jeho vrahové však nemohli zvrátit běh dějin. Věk republiky skončil a začala vláda císařů.
