In 373 BCE the classical Greek city of Helike disappeared beneath the waves. Its destruction was so catastrophic that the only way the Greek authors could make sense of it was to blame it on the supernatural - Poseidon destroyed the city. It’s hauntingly similar to the myth of another Ancient civilization lost beneath the waves - Atlantis. Helike’s location is one of the greatest mysteries in archaeology, but could it be possible to rediscover the lost city and could Helike actually be Atlantis?
Die griechische Stadt Helike versinkt 373 vor Christus in den Fluten. Im Lauf der Zeit gehen die Informationen über ihre Lage verloren. Ist es möglich, die versunkene Stadt wiederzufinden? 1861 entdecken zwei deutsche Archäologen eine Münze, auf der das Wort „ELIK“ steht, der alte Name für Helike. Zum ersten Mal gibt es einen konkreten Beweis dafür, dass die Stadt mehr war als eine Legende. Seitdem sind die Forscher auf der Suche nach ihren Überresten. Ende der 1960er-Jahre lässt der griechische Archäologe Spyridon Marinatos mithilfe von Hightech-Equipment Sonarbilder des Meeresgrundes vor Korinth erstellen, aber die Suche bleibt ergebnislos. 1988 unternimmt die Archäologin Dora Katsonopoulo einen neuen Versuch, das Rätsel zu lösen. Sie beginnt damit, die antiken Texte neu zu lesen. Sie besagen, Helike sei in einem „poros“ versunken. Das altgriechische Wort für „Furt“ oder „Öffnung“ ist von Historikern bis dahin auf den Golf von Korinth bezogen worden.
