It's Swing Time in Hamburg, as Beat-Club makes the first of two road trips of live performances in this four episode pack. Lee Curtis & The All-Stars get the ball rolling with "Looking Back". Next up are two godawful German bands, The Lords and The Rattles, before the main events, three songs each from The Animals, ("See See Rider", "A Love Like Yours" and "Shake, Rattle and Roll"), and The Who, performing "I'm a Boy", "Happy Jack", and Martha Reeves and the Vandellas' "Heat Wave".
It's back to mime time in the Bremen studios, with headliners Cream performing "I Feel Free". Mods The Creation are here, performing the instantly forgettable "Painter Man". The Creation are notable for guitarist Eddie Phillips' use of a violin bow, which clearly left a lasting impression on Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page. American Sandy Posey bring us "Single Girl", Percy Sledge gives us a souful dose of "Warm And Tender Love", and The Equals deliver "I Won't Be There". Twice As Much, The Remo Four, and Graham Bonney also appear.
London's famed Marquee Club is the setting for live performances by Geno Washington & The Ram Jam Band, Cliff Bennett & The Rebel Rousers, and The Smoke, but that's just to warm up the audience for headliners The Jimi Hendrix Experience, performing "Hey Joe", and premiering "Purple Haze", and The Who are back, with "Happy Jack", "So Sad About Us", and "My Generation".
Back in Bremen, another lip sync show. Whistling Jack Smith is here, with "I Was Kaiser Bill's Batman". On tape, The Dave Clark Five water ski while "You Got What It Takes" plays in the background. There's acoustic folk from Julie Felix, performing "I Can't Touch The Sun" and "The Lost Children". Rude Boy Jimmy "The Harder They Come" Cliff shows us his amazing dance moves while performing "Give And Take". The Who pine for "Pictures of Lily", and top-billed Go-Go Girl Sandy Sarjeant shows us why she has no wikipedia bio with her vocal performance of "Give And Take". Forgettable performances by The Snappers, The Escorts and David Garrick fill the remaining time.

Episode 25 kicks off with the original Two-Tone band, The Equals, led by Eddie "Electric Avenue" Grant, performing "Police on My Back", (famously covered by The Clash fifteen years later on "Sandanista!"). There's "From the Underworld" by The Herd, featuring a very young Peter Frampton on guitar and vocals. Bella & Me, two hot blondes whose career is so obscure that Wikipedia is unaware of their existence, give us "Whatever Happened to the 7-Day Week?". The Vanilla Fudge re-envision The Supremes' "You Keep Me Hanging On", and then there's David Garrick, an ex-pat Brit who moved to Germany to try to reignite his stagnant career. It's not hard to see why he failed. Plus Family Dogg, two from The Alan Price Set, and The Fortunes.
The Bee Gees perform one of their biggest early hits, "Massachusetts". The Flower Pot Men were one of a string of studio acts fronted by Tony Burrows, he of Edison Lighthouse, White Plains, Brotherhood of Man, The Pipkins, and First Class. Following the success of the 1967 top 5 UK hit "Let's Go To San Francisco", musicians were recruited to become the band and promote the hit song. Scott McKenzie sings "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair)" about six months too late, as well as "Like an Old Time Movie". Groove to the Supremes-esque sound of Felice Taylor, singing "I Feel Love Coming On", and the Freakbeat rhythms of South African Sharon Tandy, who never had an International hit, but who was nonetheless respected enough by other musicians to have opened several shows on the 1967 Stax-Volt Revue of Europe. Sharon performs "Hold On". Barry Mason, Johnnie Young and Family Dogg round out the set.
The gem in this set is one of the all-time great 45's, "Tin Soldier" by Small Faces. There's two from the eccentric Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, performing "The Equestrian Statue" and "Little Sir Echo". Get up and dance to the "Groovy" sound of P.P. Arnold. Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich, who, in 1966, spent more weeks in the UK top 30 than any other act, play "Zabadak". The Bee Gees are back, performing "World", and the show also includes the return of The Flower Pot Men, plus Billy Nicholls and Marion.
The Herd is back, performing "Paradise Lost". Carla Thomas performs the definitive version of "B-a-b-y". Sixties fashionista Billie Davis gives her take on "Angel in the Morning", a song which had yet to be a hit by anyone at that point. Long John Baldry is here, performing "Let The Heartaches Begin", and Dave Davies of The Kinks gives us "Susannah's Still Alive". If that's not enough, Procol Harum perform "Homburg". Neil Christian, another one-hit wonder Brit ex-pat, presents "Let Me Hear You Laugh", one of the worst songs ever filmed. Dave Justin also appears.

On first glance, this appears to be an episode lacking in quality talent, but it's anything but that. The incredible live performance of Sabre Dance by Love Sculpture, featuring the virtuoso guitar of Dave Edmunds, is worth the price of admission by itself. The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band are back, with their Elvis parody, Canyons of Your Mind. Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger & The Trinity perform the jazzy Road to Cairo, and there's a music video of Canned Heat doing Going Up the Country. There's a very dreamlike underground film featuring music by The Vanilla Fudge. Harmony Grass and Amen Corner enjoy their fifteen minutes of fame, and The Tremeloes are back, covering Bob Dylan's I Shall Be Released. There's really no reason for Leapy Lee to be on this show. Root & Jenny Jackson, Billie Davis, and Barry Ryan also appear, and there's a featurette on The Troggs and an interview with Marmalade in there, too.

Ike & Tina Turner cover The Beatles' "Get Back", in footage probably left over from their appearance on Episode 64, (February, 1971), but this is no out-take in terms of performance. The Everly Brothers, some years removed from their last chart hit, deliver "Stories We Could Tell". The Grease Band, who had famously backed Joe Cocker at Woodstock and on the 1970 "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" tour, tell us about the "Wild Side of Life. The Byrds perform the instrumental "Black Mountain Rag", plus "So You Want to be a Rock' n' Roll Star", and that's just the first half of this episode. We also get Three Dog Night's take on Otis Redding's "Try a Little Tenderness", "Not to Rearrange", by Mick Abrahams Band, (Abrahams had been the original guitarist for Jethro Tull, before forming Blodwyn Pig), James Taylor performing "Come on Brother" - and yes, that is Carole King on backing vocals, plus two by Stephen Stillis' Manassas, "It Doesn't Matter" and "Hide it So Deep", and Heads, Hands & Feet.
Fanny, a rare all female rock band, perform "Borrowed Time" and "Summer Song". Ex-Turtles and Mothers of Invention vocalists The Phlorescent Leech & Eddie perform "Feel Older Now". There's three from Alice Cooper, performing "Public Animal No. 9" and "Eighteen", (there is also a non performance promo film for "Elected"). Stone the Crows, in their second incarnation following the May, 1972 onstage electrocution death of original guitarist Les Harvey, give us "Palace of the King" and "Good Time Girl". Harvey was replaced by ex-Thunderclap Newman, future Wings guitarist Jimmy McCulloch, and lead vocals were provided by Maggie Bell. King Crimson give us a taste of "Larks Tongue in Aspic", and ex-Manfred Mann founding member Mike Hugg also performs.
For fans of 70's cheese, here's a treat, 45 minutes of The Osmonds in concert. It's hard to fathom how and why this band was so popular for a short time in the early 70's. They appear to be the only young people of their day who though the Vegas Elvis look was the epitome of cool in stage attire. I found it painful to hear them cover Sly & The Family Stone. There has never been a pop act as White as this. Performances include "One Bad Apple", "Yo Yo", "Hold Her Tight", "Too Young", "Sweet and Innocent", "Why", "We've Got to Live Together", "Crazy Horses", "Puppy Love", "Down by the Lazy River", "Tamborine", and an Elvis medley sung by Little Jimmy, then 8. This was the only time an entire episode of Beat-Club was dedicated to a single performing artist, and also the last episode of the series.

Although there were many other hard rock bands before them, Black Sabbath must get credit for being rock's first heavy metal band. This show, taped at the Bremen, Germany television studios where the Beat Club show was filmed, goes back to the earliest, and arguably the best, period in Sabbath's musical history. Taped in front of a small audience, this show only contains four songs—"Black Sabbath" from the band's debut album, a crunchy re-make of the Carl Perkins classic "Blue Suede Shoes," and two songs which were brand new at the time: "Paranoid" and "Iron Man."
