All Seasons

Season 1

  • S01E01 Skye

    • BBC ALBA

In the first programme in the series, Heather travels to Sligachan in central Skye. From Thomas Telford's beautiful stone bridge, she begins her journey west through the Minginish peninsula. She takes in the breathtaking view of the Cuillin Ridge as she walks with Danny Macleod to the Fairy Pools in Glen Brittle. On a beach in Eynort, she goes in search of the razor clam - a type of shellfish she hasn't seen before. And fisherman Calum MacKinnon helps her fulfil a long held ambition - to see a sea eagle at close range.

  • S01E02 Applecross

    • BBC ALBA

In the second programme in the series, Heather explores Applecross in Wester Ross. To get there she drives along the steep and winding road that climbs the famous Bealach na Bà. Former road worker Duncan Murchison tells Heather about the challenges of keeping the road open during the winter months. At the beautiful Clachan church, Heather meets museum curator Gordon Cameron. He shows Heather the burial place of Maol Rubha, the saint who established a monastery in Applecross.

  • S01E03 Manish

    • BBC ALBA

With Donald MacDonald, she visits the beautiful village of Manish. Donald has fond memories of growing up there but explains to Heather why in 1937 his family, along with many others, took the decision to move to the more fertile west side of the island. Hamish Taylor once operated sea tours along the east coast of the island. He comes out of retirement to take Heather to one of his favourite spots - Geodha an Sgadain - where there's a spectacular and dramatic sea cave.

  • S01E04 Ardnamurchan

    • BBC ALBA

In this episode Heather explores the Ardnamurchan peninsula. Her travels begin in Moidart, the ancient estate of Macdonald of Clanranald. On the old bridge crossing the River Shiel - the boundary between Moidart and Ardnamurchan - she meets accordionist Fergie Macdonald, surely one of the clan's most well-known members today. Fergie's son John is a gamekeeper and talented shooter, and he gives Heather a quick lesson in the safe handling of a rifle. Her travels take her through the length of the remote peninsula, eventually arriving at the country's most westerly point and the spectacular Ardnamurchan Lighthouse.

  • S01E05 Black Isle

    • BBC ALBA

In this episode Heather explores the Black Isle, north of Inverness. Although not an actual island, it is almost entirely surrounded by water, and despite its proximity to the capital of the Highlands, the Black Isle feels remote and rural. Heather finds out about the peninsula's greatest claim to fame - its connection with the Brahan Seer, the legendary figure of the 17th century, whose prophetic powers eventually led to his grisly death. Heather, a keen artist, shows that her creative skills do not extend to crafting when she attempts to help Mairi Rhind spin some yarn.

  • S01E06 Gairloch

    • BBC ALBA

n the last programme in the series she travels through the parish of Gairloch in Wester Ross. Heather meets historian William McRobbie, who tells her about Loch Ewe's important role during World War II. This vast sea loch was used as a convoy assembly point for ships bound for the Atlantic and latterly Russia. Unsurprisingly the area saw more than its share of tragedy during this period, and John Murdo MacKenzie tells Heather about an event he was witness to at 12 years of age which he will never forget. Heather pops into the local radio station, Two Lochs, to meet the presenter of the weekly Gaelic programme and chats to some of its loyal listeners.
