Der Film zeigt, wie zwei Schreibtischlampen (eine größere namens Luxo (von lat. lux : Licht) und eine kleinere namens Luxo Jr.) mit einem Gummiball spielen. Als Luxo Jr. auf den Ball springt und darauf herumhüpft, entweicht die Luft daraus. Die kleine Leuchte schaut etwas verdutzt in die Kamera und schafft dann den platten Ball beschämt zur Seite. Die Größere glaubt zunächst, die Kleinere hätte die Lektion gelernt – kurz darauf spielt sie jedoch schon wieder, diesmal mit einem noch größeren Ball.
In a dark room, a large illuminated balanced-arm desk lamp named Luxo Sr. sees a small yellow ball with a blue stripe and a red star on the front rolling up to him. He eyes the ball curiously, and pushes it away, but the ball comes back to him. He pushes it away again. The ball comes back to him, but this time, it rolls past him. A smaller desk lamp, named Luxo Jr., hops over and continues playing with the ball. Luxo Jr. then balances himself on top of the ball, causing it to deflate. Luxo Jr. flips the deflated ball onto its side and looks up at Luxo Sr. who gently admonishes his son. Luxo Jr. then hops off-screen and is later seen playing with his beach ball. Luxo Sr. looks at the camera, then shakes his head in embarrassment.
Una lampada per bambini trova una palla con cui giocare e si diverte un mondo finché la palla non scoppia. Proprio quando il vecchio Luxo pensa che suo figlio si darà una calmata, Luxo Jr. trova una palla più grande.

O filme se passa em cima de uma de uma mesa de trabalho, e conta a história de um papai-luminária e do seu simpático filho chamado Luxo Jr., que encontra uma pequena bola e começa a brincar com seu pai. Luxo Jr. acidentalmente fura a bola, estragando toda a brincadeira, e fica muito triste e sai de cena, mas no mesmo momento ele volta já brincando com uma bola maior do que ele mesmo.
