Stepping into the late-late slot vacated by David Letterman, Conan O'Brien stars in a show that far outdoes its nocturnal competition in sheer strangeness. David Letterman hosted this popular late-night comedy/talk-show for 11 years on NBC. Famous recurring bits included the “Top Ten” lists, a weekly “Viewer Mail” segment, and “Stupid Pet Tricks” (complete with slo-mo instant replay). Dave would often go on location or to the phones to play pranks — oftentimes venturing no further than the immediate area of his Rockefeller Center studio. Fans also remember the use of unusual camera placements (Sky-Cam, Guest-Cam, Monkey-Cam, etc.), and Dave's vast supporting cast (bandleader Paul Shaffer, writer Chris Elliott, Larry “Bud” Melman, to name a few). Many celebrities and bands came on to keep the appearance of a normal talk-show. It was anything but.

TV Nation, which first aired in the summer of 1994, in its own small way, made history. Michael Moore, director of the shambling working-class documentaries Roger & Me and The Big One and the subsequent Bravo! cable program The Awful Truth, persuaded NBC to give him a run of hour-long shows that would enlist the talents of pop-culture correspondents from Karen Duffy to Steven Wright in the name of confrontational TV. Opening with a jump-cutting montage of loaded images, to the alternating synthesized plucked strings and heavy-metal guitar of tomandandy, and punctuated by nonsensical polls conducted by Widgery & Associates, TV Nation took Moore and his colleagues up (inside skyscrapers), down (into bomb shelters), and around the globe--even to the Ukraine--to confront the exploiters, polluters, and hypocrites threatening Moore's peaceable and generally liberal-minded view of the world.

In 1980, following lengthy negotiations, NBC president Fred Silverman and Johnny Carson arrived at a contract agreement which would keep the "King of Late Night" in place for another three years. Part of that agreement included the creation of Carson Productions. One of the first projects for Johnny's stable was to create a show around frequent "Tonight Show" guest host David Letterman. "The David Letterman" show was a live, 90-minute alternative to game shows, soap operas and syndicated reruns of old sitcoms. Regulars included Edie McClurg as "Mrs. Marv Mendenhall" (whose last name was inspired by Paul Mendenhall, a longtime radio voice in Dave's college town of Muncie, Indiana), Valri Bromfield as crazy teen "Debbie Smith," and Paul Raley as conspiracy-crazed former FBI agent "P.J. Rails." NBC newsman Edwin Newman provided (real) news updates. The first announcer was comedian Bob Sarlatte; Bill Wendell would later assume announcing duties. Frank Owen (II) was the bandleade

Each of the historical dramas covered one public figure who served as a model of virtue and courage under pressure. Each subject took an unpopular stand and persevered in their pursuit of justice and the right path, in spite of the coercion and vilification of the majority. "This book is not just the stories of the past but a book of hope and confidence for the future. What happens to the country, to the world, depends on what we do with what others have left us." ”from the book's foreword by Robert F. Kennedy
