滿清年間，聰敏機靈的宋世傑因父親宋安是名獄吏，從小就游走於牢房內，見盡世間不平之事，令他不相信法律有公義。世傑長大後亦不願進官場，縱有真才實學，也只暗中相助同試考生何守信中舉，他則偕兄弟宋阿九浪遊天下。世傑及後卻被捲進「蜘蛛精殺人案」中，他為尋真兇展示狀師才華，期間更結識了武功高強的青樓護衛玲瓏……案件了結，世傑和玲瓏結為夫妻，他亦正式踏上狀師之路，還接連遇到一宗宗錯綜複雜的大案……
