Mark Verelst is een negentienjarige jongen die studeert voor scheepsmachinist. Hij ontdekt in een verlaten kreek een wrak. Samen met enkele vrienden wil hij de schuit opknappen tot een zeewaardig vaartuig. Ze dopen hun boot 'Zanzibar' en kiezen het ruime sop.
