Without seeing Yoritomo, Yoshitsune has to go back to Kyoto with Munemori and Kiyomune. Yoshitsune comes to harbor a suspicion against Yoritomo for what Yoritomo has done to him. For his part, Yoritomo becomes skeptical that Yoshitsune would revolt against him and starts to hatch a plot to prevent Yoshitsune from getting power in Kyoto. On the way to Kyoto, Yoshitsune stops in at a temple. Hearing that Shigehira was there a few days ago, Yoshitsune recalls with Munemori the old days they spend together. Before they get to Kyoto, one of Yoritomo’s retainers comes from Kamakura and conveys Yoshitsune Yoritomo’s order to kill Mumemori. 頼朝（中井貴一）との対面を果たせず、平宗盛（鶴見辰吾）親子を伴い京へ帰ることとなった義経（滝沢秀明）の胸中には、頼朝の仕打ちに対する疑念が芽生え始めていた。一方、南都への護送中に僧兵に捕らえらえた平重衡（細川茂樹）は、かつての東大寺・興福寺焼き討ちの罪を問われ、処刑されることになる。重衡を捜し求めていた妻・輔子（戸田菜穂）は、処刑直前の重衡と会い、最期の別れを惜しむ。
