梁幗英（劉美君 飾）、黃忠信（關禮傑 飾）及藍祖輝（陳嘉輝 飾），都同擁有高尚職業，表面上都過着一般中產階級的寬裕而安定的生活，但背後他們卻常為金錢及生活而煩惱。信妻藍祖兒（劉秀萍 飾）因揮霍成性，常令信入不敷支。英為了將來生活安定，終日全神貫注地拼命賺錢，便冷落丈夫曲安源（李國麟 飾），後更由於一次投機失敗，把一生積蓄化為烏有。輝亦因為追求名利與物質生活，常與愛侶梁幗鳳（袁詠儀 飾）在感情上產生不少磨擦。 在一次偶然機會下，他們頓然擁有橫財五千萬，但卻未能因此而將困境扭轉，反而增添更多煩惱困擾。因為祖兒背棄信，挾帶私逃；而源抵受不住英利慾薰心，便與大陸女工樂敏（陳慧儀 飾）私奔外地；輝亦因獲橫財與鳳意見不合而分手，甚至連信的表弟黎旭（吳剛 飾）亦無辜涉入旋渦，被歹徒因財而綁架，身陷險境。最後在他們痛定思痛之後，會否為了換回安定的生活而放棄五千萬撗財呢
