Die Spuren der Morde führen zu dem Immobilienhai und Grundstücksspekulanten Vancliff, der mit ungeheurer Brutalität seine Mieten eintreibt. Höchst verdächtig ist außerdem der fanatische schwarze Prediger und Wunderheiler Dr. Kingston, der mit Tieropfern schwarze Messen zelebriert. Auch der selbsternannte Künstler Louis Blake, dessen Bilder Gewalt darstellen und sogar mit Blut gemalt sind, ist ein potentieller Täter. Für Dr. Tony Hill stellen die beiden Toten eine Warnung oder Verwünschung dar. Ihn beschäftigt vor allem die Frage, welche Absicht der Mörder mit seinen Taten verfolgt. Gibt es einen religiösen Hintergrund? Handelt es sich um einen Fluch oder eine Drohung? Wurden die Taten nur von einem oder sogar von zwei Mördern begangen?
A teenage girl and a young boy are found dead and they appear to have been victims of a ritual killing. Alex is upset by the lack of care shown by their bereaved families as she’s having problems of her own with her son Ben.
The trail leads to links with a property tycoon who’ll stop at nothing to get the rent paid, a preacher whose “healing” activities involve animal sacrifice, and a self-styled artist whose works are painted in blood.
For Tony the dead bodies could be a warning and he puzzles over what the killer might want to gain and why. Is this caused by a religious cult? Is it one killer or two with one suspect following the other?
Meanwhile Alex has taken Tony’s advice and hired a nanny, easing her pressures with Ben and work. When the nanny returns home without Ben the team realise the awful truth.
The killer has been lurking unseen but close by, manipulating the police via psychological suggestion just as they have manipulated their victims. And the killer now has Ben.

Alex, troublée par la brusque réapparition du père de son fils, perd totalement pied en interrogeant les parents de la victime. L’autopsie révèle la présence de peinture sous les ongles de Jenny. Après avoir contacté le fabricant de peinture, Kevin apprend que seuls trois clients au Royaume-Uni lui ont passé commande, dont Louis Blake, un artiste qui peint des toiles morbides. Placé en garde à vue, il avoue que Jenny a posé plusieurs fois pour lui. Plus tard, les restes d’un enfant de 9 ans, Jonnasse Nkomo, sont découverts dans l’eau, son coeur et ses yeux ont été arrachés et il a subi des scarifications à l’abdomen. Les policiers pointent d’étranges similitudes avec le décès de Jenny. Le docteur Tony Hill penche pour la thèse du satanisme ou d’un rituel vaudou, surtout quand le père de Jonnasse évoque Kingston, un prédicateur à qui il a fait appel pour le délivrer du mal. Tandis que Tony Hill et le lieutenant Fielding interrogent Kingston, on retrouve d’autres morceaux de cadavres sur un chantier.
