Mysteriously, Pat left on a Monday and was replaced the next day by the world-renowned Rolf Benirschke...well, world renowned if you were a San Diego Chargers fan. Merv Griffin discovered the former place-kicker in 1988 and decided he'd be the perfect fit for daytime Wheel. The problem: Rolf had zero previous TV experience. His first episode was a bizarre outing, with Vanna walking out during the show opening to introduce Rolf to the world. At both the beginning and end of the show, Rolf observed several times that "this is a lot different than football." Vanna practically had to carry the entire final segment of Rolf's first show.
The following changes are made to the show this year: A "registered trademark" (®) symbol is added to the show's logo. The Wheel is slightly changed: The $2,500 and $3,500 wedges are now in the Clarendon font. In Round 2, the "off-model" $300 wedge covering Free Spin is changed to the Clarendon font, albeit shorter and narrower than the other wedges. The Prize wedges' lettering returns to normal. As of this season, the slide whistle no longer sounds if Pat hits Bankrupt on the Final Spin. The second and more familiar $25,000 sign debuts. This one, shaped like an elongated hexagon, is composed of green and blue light bulbs which give a "pulsating" effect. A week sometime this season offers a $75,000 Russian sable mink coat in the Bonus Round. Several weeks this season offer a $45,576 "Trip of a Lifetime" in the Bonus Round, which may be the most expensive vacation offered in the Bonus Round. Starting this season, and lasting until at least Season 9, the show offers official T-shirts and sweatshirts to all contestants as consolation prizes. The shirts have the traditional logo with the Round 4 template as the Wheel part of the logo, with "I'm a Wheel Watcher!" under it.

The season 25 premiere has the following changes to the show: The contestant score displays are upgraded to enlarged plasma screens. The scoreboards show the 25th Anniversary logo in the opening. For this week of taping only, they display the score in very tall numbers. The contestant's name is in very small letters over the score, and the control is indicated by the name blinking. The Bankrupt and Lose A Turn graphics now appear and disappear in varying ways. If Lose A Turn is hit, those words are now on two lines of the scoreboard instead of one. "Big Money" is placed over the score if the contestant has the Big Money wedge. The WHEEL, OF, and FORTUNE graphics on the scoreboards (now only seen during the final segment) are enlarged and changed to the actual font of the show's logo.
Season 27th premiere was on location at the Venetian in Las Vegas!
