The Battle of Mons was the first major action of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) in the First World War. The British army, with support from France, attacked the German army, which had just officially declared war a few weeks prior. It quickly became clear that the German army was much larger and after French forces retreated, the situation for the British didn't look promising. However, due to what some soldiers thought of as divine intervention - aka angels granting protection, a safe retreat was possible. But what really happened?
