Upstairs, Downstairs

Den prisbelønnede serie følger familien Bellamy og dens tjenestefolk i London i starten af det forrige århundrede. I den øverste del af det fornemme palæ på Eaton Place 165, lever parlamentsmedlemmet Richard Bellamy og hans kone det søde liv som medlemmer af det aristokratiske borgerskab. Nedenunder er tjenestefolk indkvarteret under ledelse af den stolte, skotske butler Hudson, som af og til må huske sine stuepiger på, at de ikke er af adelig herkomst...

Die Bellamys und ihre Hausangestellten lebten in einem fünfstöckigen Stadthaus am Eaton Place 165, Belgravia in London. Die Familie Bellamy bestand aus Richard Bellamy (David Langton), seiner ersten Frau Marjorie, die tragischerweise beim Untergang der Titanic ihr Leben verliert, und deren zwei Kindern James und Elizabeth. Weiterhin leben im Haushalt Richards zweite Frau Virginia, James' Frau Hazel, die bei einer Grippeepidemie (Spanische Grippe 1918-1920) stirbt, und Georgina Worsley (Lesley-Anne Down), die Cousine von James und Elizabeth. Die bekanntesten Hausangestellten waren Angus Hudson, der Butler, gespielt von Gordon Jackson, Mrs. Kate Bridges, die Köchin, gespielt von Angela Baddeley, Rose Buck, Hausmädchen gespielt von Jean Marsh, das Küchenmädchen Ruby Finch, gespielt von Jenny Tomasin, der Diener Edward Barnes, gespielt von Christopher Beeny und Daisy Peel, das Hausmädchen, gespielt von Jacqueline Tong, das später Edward heiratete.

Covering a span of 27 years (1903-1930), Upstairs, Downstairs follows the lives of the wealthy Bellamy family residing upstairs at 165 Eaton Place, London, as well as the lives of those employed in their service living downstairs. Richard Bellamy, the son of a poor parson, is married to Lady Marjorie, the daughter of the wealthy Earl and Countess of Southwold, whose family money provides for the Bellamy's lavish lifestyle. As an influential member of the Conservative party, the Earl secures a seat in Parliament for Richard, with the expectation that he will support conservative policies. He tries his best to please his wife's family but, being a Liberal at heart, Richard finds it's not always that easy. These political and financial differences are a reoccurring source of contention for the Bellamys. On the surface, the lives of the family living upstairs couldn't seem more different than those of the servants living below but, strangely enough, through the years their lives often intersect, becoming increasingly entwined as time goes by. The addition of real-life events, like the tragic sinking of the RMS Titanic and the horrors of World War I, incorporated into the storylines add a touch of authenticity and realism to the show.

La série met en scène la saga, entre 1903 et 1930, des Bellamy, une famille aristocratique anglaise et de leurs domestiques dans la maison qu'ils partagent, seulement séparés par les escaliers : les maîtres en haut (Upstairs) et la domesticité en bas (Downstairs).

La acción abarca las tres primeras décadas del siglo XX y describe, a través de las relaciones familiares y de las pequeñas anécdotas domésticas, la evolución de la sociedad británica al hilo de los acontecimientos históricos. Apoyados en el rígido código de la moral victoriana los Bellamy comentan, con una taza de té en la mano, la situación política y social del país mientras los sirvientes hacen lo propio dos pisos más abajo sin que sus opiniones difieran mucho de las de sus amos (beben el mismo té aunque no utilizan la misma vajilla). Pero nada es eterno y entre sufragistas, criadas embarazadas por soberbios aristócratas, huelgas y conflictos armados, el mundo de Lord Bellamy y del pobre Hudson se hunde como el Titanic (uno de los capítulos narra la muerte de la insustancial Lady Marjory en el hundimiento del barco).
