In 1996 two girls and their mother were brutally attacked in the English countryside in Kent. Local loner Michael Stone carried out a brutal and frenzied hammer attack on the family and left them for dead. Lin Russell and her six-year-old daughter Megan died from their injuries. Against all the odds, however, the elder daughter Josie survived and made a remarkable recovery. The story of this devastating crime is told through the eyes of those closest to the tragedy. Father and husband Shaun Russell opens his heart about the loss of his family. The programme also features interviews with Dave Stevens, a police officer whose relentless work helped bring the killer to justice, Lucy Gregson, a close friend of Josie Russell, and Lynda Roberts, Josieʼs former primary school teacher. Lynda reveals the devastating effect the murders had on the whole community and how everyone rallied together to help her recover. Finally, the programme also hears from Pauline Smith, a police family liaison officer. Pauline spent years working with the Russells, rehabilitating Josie and piecing together her memory of the attack.
