Als im Jahr 1987 die junge Leichtathletin Birgit Dressel mit 26 Jahren stirbt, stellt sich wenige Monate später heraus, dass sie über Jahre dutzende Medikamente, darunter Dopingpräparate, eingenommen hatte und in den letzten Tagen ihres Lebens viele Schmerzmittel schluckte. Sie gilt als erste Dopingtote der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Viele Indizien weisen auf eine komplexere Verwicklung hin. Bis heute muss sich niemand für ihren Tod verantworten.
