Die meisten Bilder, die Albert Kahn und seine Fotofragen in den Jahren 1911/12 in Europa aufnehmen, zeigen das ruhige Leben einer ländlichen Bevölkerung. Doch wenn man die Photos genauer betrachtet, erkennt man, welche Krankheit den Kontinent befallen hatte: Nationalismus. Und genau dieser Nationalismus führte Europa nur zwei Jahre später in den ersten Weltkrieg, der fast 10 Millionen Todesopfer forderte.
It is the eve of the First World War and Kahn's photographers are travelling from the West, where they capture the timeless values of traditional rural lives, to the East, where they witness the emerging force of nationalism – a force that would plunge Eastern Europe, and then the world, into war.
