Abbey Bartlet steht mächtig unter Druck: Die patriotische Frauenvereinigung "Töchter der amerikanischen Revolution" stellt nämlich infrage, dass Abbey rechtmäßiges Mitglied ist - wofür man von jemandem abstammen muss, der aktiv für die amerikanische Unabhängigkeit gekämpft hat. Gleichzeitig tritt Amy ihren Job als Büroleiterin der First Lady an. Hier muss sie sich nicht nur der bösen Streiche von Josh erwehren, sondern auch im Auftrag ihrer neuen Chefin einen kontroversen Gesetzentwurf sabotieren...

Toby's old friend approaches him ready to blow the whistle on his employer's violations of environmental laws; staff pranks abound on Amy's first day at the office; Abbey charges Amy with the task of convincing the President to threaten a veto on a foreign aid bill containing an abortion gag rule provision; claiming that Abbey's ancestor was a pirate rather than a privateer, a prominent member threatens to mount a boycott of the D.A.R. dinner at which Zoey will be inducted until Will, C.J. and Amy devise a plan to defuse the situation; at the behest of Jean Paul, Zoey sends Charlie a "Dear John" email, but Charlie refuses to accept the brushoff and declares his love for Zoey; Donna is less than thrilled when Josh assigns her the job of shadowing a possible security risk at Zoey's D.A.R. induction; Will takes one for the team in putting an environmental and political face on the destruction and deaths which resulted from the melting of an Alaskan glacier.

E' il primo giorno di lavoro di Amy Gardner come capo dello staff di Abby Bartlet. La donna riceve alcune pressioni da parte della First Lady che vorrebbe che il Presidente minacciasse il veto sulla legge che prevede alcuni stanziamenti ai paesi stranieri. Un'anziana figlia della Rivoluzione Americana è decisa a boicottare un ricevimento di gala a causa del fatto che la First Lady discende da un sanguinario pirata. Un vecchio amico di Toby avvicina quest'ultimo e gli fornisce informazioni circa alcune violazioni commesse dalla ditta presso cui lavora, un'azienda chimica.

Indignada porque se ha vinculado un proyecto antiaborto con el proyecto de ley de ayuda a países pobres, Abbey, la Primera Dama, le pide en secreto a Amy que acaba de empezar a trabajar como directora de su gabinete, que la ayude a conspirar para que fracase este último proyecto que precisamente ha sido propuesto por el propio Presidente.
