Entering North Korea was a surreal challenge for VICE. After months of negotiation, officials allowed journalists to attend the Arirang Mass Games, then restricted them to “tourist” status. Upon arrival in China, North Korean officials took their passports and money and staged a performance with secret police watching. To secure their visas, the journalists joined in enthusiastically, aware of the risks. This unusual start hinted at the bizarre journey that lay ahead.— VICE Founder Shane Smith
