Today on The Skid Factory, Alan enlists his mate Matt to help Fabricate a new Rear bar and Tyre carrier for the Cummins Powered Patrol.
Today on The Skid Factory Al, Woody and their mate Nickers fit a bunch of Accessories to the Cummins Powered Patrol including a ROLA Roof rack, XTM Awning and Ridge Ryder Spotlights. The patrol then leaves the shed for the first time under its own power for a minor test drive around the block.
Today on The Skid Factory, We're hanging out with our mate "Chappy" From Evolution Tuning in Beerwah to get Al's 6BT cummins Powered Nissan Patrol Tuned. Thanks to Chris and Mikalah for going above and beyond with working on the Patrol. Give them a follow on social media!
Today on The Skid Factory we head out onto some mild yet slippery tracks with Sam from @Built Not Bought and Jackson and Dylan from Eumundi4x4 The patrol is fresh on the road so its a great time for a test drive / Shakedown and also perfect for Alan to get comfortable in the drivers seat.
Al’s Cummins 6BT powered patrol received an upgraded turbo but not everything went to plan https://fb.watch/7AqULKTYM6/
Alan's decided its time to build his Eldest son his first car so tis time for the family wagon to be treated to a 6 speed Manual transmission and some well needed TLC.
Today on The Skid Factory, Al's Son Gus and his mate Harry give us a hand to remove the broken 5 speed automatic transmission and tired EZ30D and swap it for a long ratio 6 speed manual transmission and low KM EZ30D from the Donor car.
Today on The Skid Factory, The donor differential subframe is swapped into the wagon with some new Bushes, the Coilovers are adjusted and bolted in along with some new Brake Pads and Rotors supplied by Golebys Parts. The Grommets then jump onto the Welder and help with fabricating the exhaust.
Today on The Skid Factory we head down to visit our mate Kye from Andrews High Tech to get the liberty Tuned. It's then off to the Sunshine Coast Motor Sport Club Track to teach Skinny Range Al some driving techniques in a controlled environment.
Project Cars are hard work, Especially when you decide to do an engine swap. Theres not always a "bolt in kit" available and sometimes its hard to know where to start. Al's done more engine swaps than the average Joe so today on The Skid Factory he's sharing some tips on how to plan your project and things you need to consider.
Today on The Skid Factory we're hanging out with our mate Robby Abbott who's building our mate Millsi a new engine for his CF Bedford van. As if 700HP wasn't enough!
The Bedford is back and crazier than ever before! Today on The Skid Factory we take a look at what's been changed Since we last saw the Bedford and then fit up a new @Hughes Performance 4L80E race transmission.
On this episode of The Skid Factory we continue to sort through the Bedfords parts and fit up the Manifolds, Turbo and Piping.
Today on The Skid Factory, our mate Mark dropped off his 1986 H252 Nissan President to get some upgrades in the form of re-fitting fuel injection back onto the engine.
Today on The Skid Factory We're wiring in a @Haltech Elite 550 onto Marks Y44 Nissan V8.
Today on The Skid Factory, Al and Woody sort out the fuel system and then go through the basics of what's required when it comes to configuring your ECU.
Today on The Skid Factory we head down to see our mate Kye from AHT Performance to get Mark's 1986 H252 Nissan President tuned. It's not a high powered vehicle but it still requires a good tune to maximise both power delivery and Fuel Efficiency.
Woody recently upgraded his daily driver for this 2010 NT Mitsubishi Pajero. Originally it only needed a few things to get it on the road and all was going well until Woody went for a 4x4 with some mates and used the broken intercooler as a drinking straw..
Woody decided to cheap out and save himself $1500 by purchasing a Fire Damaged engine, Little did he realise that it required almost more work than it was worth! Would you purchase an engine like this to save yourself some money?
Today on the Skid factory, Woody & Al fix one of the most common failures on the Mitsubishi Pajero. The location of the factory Intercooler makes it susceptible to damage when off-roading causing it to leak and worst case turning it into a drinking straw damaging the otherwise bullet-proof 4M41 Engine. Upgrading the intercooler size and mounting it higher is a common upgrade providing cooler intake temperatures and keeps it out of harms way. It's then off to see Matt at Just Autos for a Dyno Tune to extract more power and torque.
Today on The Skid Factory Woody's Pajero receives some Camping Upgrades in the form of a Drifta Stockton Roof Top Tent, a bunch of goodies from Ridge Ryder and XTM including a 270deg awning, storage drawers and a dual battery system that's then wired up and controlled by a Red Arc BCDC charger. There's a bit of work involved and you might have to get creative with mounting but a well setup 4WD makes camping in style a Breeze.
If you had the budget, What Engine would you swap into your 4x4? Today on The Skid Factory, Al talks candidly about the Pros and Cons of a Cummins swap into a Nissan Patrol. There's a lot of variables to consider and it is a costly conversion.
Today on The Skid Factory Al Addresses a couple of things on the Patrol that he wasn't happy with after finishing the conversion, One of them was a change of Turbocharger but Captain Snap Ring didn't want to co operate which ended in disaster. Thanks to Matt from Double Duty Diesel for being very helpful throughout the build and helping out with the Turbo
Today on The Skid Factory Woody & Al prep the Pajero for some Off-Road 4x4 action by fitting a Winch, Dobinsons 2 inch Lift Kit and some Boos Bash Plates! It might be a soccer mums Mall Crawler but at least Woody now looks the part when he's doing the shopping.
Today on The Skid Factory, We head out to Landcruiser Mountain Park with some good mates for a bit of fun in the dirt. Huge thanks to Sam, Jackson, Dylan, Khye, Tim and Phil for coming out. We're new to this 4X4 stuff and had a bunch of fun learning the ropes. Theres a few poop in pants moments and epic concentration faces throughout the episode.
Today on The Skid Factory Al & Woody finish off Milli's Bedford van & Wire in the Haltech NEXUS R5 VCU before hitting the start button and firing the De-stroked 3.8L Barra into life!
"The Final Drive" Today on The Skid Factory, Al takes a 1971 Nissan Skyline, aka, "HakoSuka" for a spirited drive through the Hinterland saying farewell to the original L20A engine. It's then back to the workshop to talk about the car and some plans that we have for it! Thanks to Gavin for his patience with us while we planned this build! If you're after a hint for what engine we're using, have a watch of out NZ series, Theres a few clues there!
Today on The Skid Factory, Al & Woody visit Hartley Engines & Motorsport Over in New Zealand and talk to Nelson Hartley about the Nissan VK56DE Engine. We think it is a perfect match for Gavin's 1971 Nissan Skyline "Hakosuka".
Today on The Skid Factory Woody & Al unbox the power plant for the Hakosuka. Nelson from Hartley Engines & Motorsport has built this "Street Combo" Nissan VK56DE which hopefully fits in the engine bay of this 1971 Nissan Skyline. Whats not to love about a 5.6L alloy V8 making 570HP
Millsi's 3.8L De-stoked Barra Bedford Needs a Bigger Turbo.
Is this Potentially an 8 Second Car? Today on The Skid Factory, We join Millsi at Queensland Raceway for some happy laps / Roll racing. It's worth noting that Millsi hasn't turned the boost up yet and there's plenty more in it, Imagine this thing using all of its power!
When your mates own FAST cars, Jump in the Passenger seat! Today on The Skid Factory we head to Queensland Raceway and jump on some of our mates
Mounting a Quad cam V8 into a car that was designed for a straight 6 isn't always easy, In this Hakosuka's case we have had to modify quite as few things including a complete different crossmember and steering setup and a few minor cuts of the transmission tunnel to fit the TR6060 transmission.
Would you cut into this Japanese Icon? Today on The Skid Factory we finalise the position of the Hartley VK56 in the engine bay and fabricate some engine mounts. Our mate panel beater Mark then pops around to assist us in fitting some flares to Gav's Hakosuka.
With solid rotor single piston callipers on the front and drum brakes on the rear assisted by a tiny brake booster, The Hakosuka was never going to stop in a hurry. Add 500hp to the rear wheels and the need for good braking is even more important. The front struts were swapped out with a combination of Mazda RX7 & Toyota Ke70 coilovers and the front brakes converted to 287mm AU Falcon Rotors and Twin piston Callipers using a Hopper Stoppers Kit. The rear brakes consists of Mazda 3 Rotors and Callipers using some custom adapter brackets and an adjustable Spring and Shock combo from Japan.
Today on The Skid Factory Woody heads down to All Asian Day at Lakeside Raceway in the Poor Man's Ferrari for a bit of fun around the track and to also advertise it for sale.

Today on The Skid Factory, Woody heads down to QLD Jamboree with his mate Guy who owns a 7 Second Barra Powered KE20 Corolla.
Nissan Vs Toyota V8's! Which engine are you picking? Today on The Skid Factory, We have a chat with Nelson from Hartley Engineering & Motorsport about some key differences with Nissan & Toyota V8 Engines. Both Nelson and Alan have been working with these engines for many years so it's a great discussion to have. Have your say, In your opinion , which is Better?
VK56 & Tr6060 converted 1971 Nissan Skyline Hakosuka. Could this be the perfect JDM Restomod combination? Today on The Skid Factory there's a bunch of progress made on the Hulkosuka including sorting out the suspension, Gear shifter location and crossmember modifications. With everything now removed we're ready to send it all off for powder coating.
Today on The Skid Factory the Hako gets pieced back together with some freshly painted and Powder coated parts!
Today on The Skid Factory Woody & Al get the clutch issues sorted by using a Twin Plate Clutch with a higher stack height, and spacing out the concentric slave cylinder by 15mm,. Some new Hard brake lines are then bent up and secured to the body.
Converting a 1971 Carby fuel tank to EFI with a Drop in Fuel Pump Assembly. Today on The Skid Factory AL modifies the standard Nissan Skyline fuel tank to accommodate an In-Tank EFI setup consisting of a VT Commodore MRA Fuel Pump Assembly with a Weld In mount via Raceworks. Al then fabricates some 4 -1 Extractors out of 1&3/4" mild steel.
Who doesn't love the sound of Independent Throttle bodies? Especially when they're paired with an angry V8... On this episode of The Skid Factory, we get the wiring sorted, finish the exhaust and fit the rear suspension in preparation for the first start of the Hartley Nissan VK56 in Gav's 1971 'Hakosuka' Nissan Skyline 2000GTX
Today on The Skid Factory We're kicking off another Barra Build! Wayne's XE Falcon Longroof is an OG Shed build which was originally built back in 2015 with a Turbo Nissan VH41 V8, It's been cruising the streets of the Sunshine Coast ever since until recently when a side feed injector o-ring left the chat and hydraulic locked the engine. There was a couple of options to fix the car but one obvious choice became apparent.
Today on The Skid Factory Wayne's 1984 Ford Falcon XE Wagon Gets it's freshly built BARRA installed using a Tuff Mounts kit and a bunch of goodies from Goleby's Parts, Go Fast Bits and Raceworks.
Today on The Skid Factory Woody & AL finish off Waynes 1984 Ford Falcon XE Wagon by fabricating some intercooler pipes, Wiring the @Haltech elite2500 ECU and finalise the fuel system with a bunch of Raceworks and @GFB goodies. Once everything's sorted it's ready for the First Start!
To bring in the New Year we take a look at our mate and engine build specialist Johns 1977 XC Falcon Ute race car. John built the entire car himself from what was his daily driver 20 years ago. It features a twin turbo 351 Cleveland running on methanol via a blow through Demon carby. We take a detailed look at what a talented bloke can do in his home garage before looking at ways to improve the setup with some modern tech.
John's 4V 351 Cleveland SBF 1977 XC Ford Falcon Ute is a an absolute work of art but how does it perform at at track? We're not trying to break any records, We're just a few blokes having some fun and trying to get some testing in to see if the Blow Through Carby setup is going to work which we found out it didn't. There was also some oil pressure issues which we only found out about after editing the video...
Do carburettors need electronics or just a screwdriver and a tightly laced pair of New Balance sneakers?
Today on The Skid Factory, AL & John give the XC's 351 Cleveland a freshen up after it developed a nasty bottom end noise just prior to a scheduled dyno session. We take the opportunity to dive into the construction of one of Ford's iconic engines from the late 60's and chat about it's assets and limitations and how it relates to its brother the Windsor engine.
Today on The Skid Factory, Al visits The Hoff on a Sunday to get both Wayne's Barra powered XE falcon tuned as well as setting up John's @Haltech VMS controlled 351 Cleveland XC ute.

Today on The Skid Factory it's time to Tub Al's Crown! With the impending fitment of the Harrop supercharged Chevrolet big block engine we turn our attention back to the rear end of the Crown. To get all that torque to the road we need some decent sized tyres. The 15x10" Enemies Racing wheels are wrapped in Zestino 255/60R15 Drag Radials which didn't fit in the original rear tubs so we summoned the help of Matt from Rogan Industries to do a "Split" or "Mini" tub job on the rear inner sheetmetal. Thanks to Matt from Rogan Industries for the expertise. @roganindustries
Today on The Skid Factory AL Fits up the Hopper Stoppers Brake Kit and Explains what Bump Steer is and how we can fix it in our application.

Today on The Skid Factory Mark's 1970 ZC Ford Fairlane is back in the shed for a few upgrades consisting of a 417 motorsports Water to Air intercooler and a 72/75 Turbo! The aim is not only more power via Efficiency but to also reduce some clutter within the engine bay to help with Heat Soak when the car is stationary causing the coolant temperatures to rise.
Today on The Skid Factory We're building another diff with Matt from Rogan Industries. This time it’s for Kevin and we want to go FAST!
Our mates over at @supercheapautotv have asked us to build them a Billy Cart to compete in the @redbull Billly Cart Race which is being held at Landsdown Street and Treasury Gardens in Melbourne Victoria on Saturday the 3RD December We've got no idea how to build a Billy Cart but we do have a bit of an idea of how to build an engine so we decided to hit the magnifying glass to upscale a V8 and then add some BMX Wheels! We're only half way there so be sure to tune in next week to see the finished product and see Woody race this masterpiece down the Red Bull Race track!
Our mates over at @supercheapautotv have asked us to build them a Billy Cart to compete in the @redbull Billy Cart Race in Melbourne Victoria at Treasury Gardens! Have you seen part 1? https://youtu.be/goh1_IqDFE4 We've got no idea how to build a Billy Cart but we do have a bit of an idea of how to build an engine so we decided to hit the magnifying glass to upscale an engine and then add some BMX Wheels! Halfway through we realised that we were over the limit when it came to our weight restriction so we busted out the hole saw to remove some material and we managed to get it down to 79KG! Once we arrived In Melbourne we checked out some of the other carts and then it was time to RACE!
On this Episode of The Skid Factory, Al prepares the Big Block Crown for a return to the Dyno. The radiator is replaced, the lower supercharger pulley is changed from 250mm to 215mm to lower the maximum boost pressure and the fuel system is upgraded with Raceworks 1500cc injectors and a second fuel pump. We then head down to see Kye at Knight Family Motorsport to update the tune for the new boost pressure and fuel system.
In this episode of The Skid Factory we load the Big Block Crown up and head to Willowbank Raceway for its maiden run down the 1/8 mile drag strip. The Crown's Big Block Chev doesn't disappoint but getting the power to the track proves to be difficult. The Hako also makes a surprise appearance and Gav pilots it down the strip with constant improvements. Thanks to Kye from @knightfamilymotorsport keeping a watchful eye on the cars and the Haltech ecu data logging to maximise the traction down the strip.
Today on The Skid Factory We're Getting That Datsun Difference by checking out Timmy's Vq35 Turbo Powered Datsun Bluebird. Timmy has featured on the show many times helping us out with wiring and showing off his Datsun products from One Six Industries. He has a couple of cool Dattos and since we were doing some work on this one for him we thought we'd show it off before getting stuck into the job. The Current setup consists of a VQ35 bottom end from a Nissan Elgrand with Weisco Pistons and Eagle Conrods mated to VQ30 Cylinder Heads with HKS MLS Gaskets ARP L19 Head studs, VQ35 Kelford Camshafts and Valve Springs. Previously Timmy had fitted a GT35/82 (Too small) followed by an BW-S362 (A bit lazy) and it currently has a GT35/84RS (Turbine to restrictive) Timmy's always looking for more and ever-evolving the vehicle so stay tuned for next weeks episode where we'll be changing the turbo for a G40-1150
Today on The Skid Factory We're swapping out the GTX3584RS on Timmy's Turbo VQ35DE Datsun Bluebird for a larger G40 turbo. To complement the bigger turbo we're also fitting a GFB EX44 Wastegate and fabricating a 4" into 3.5" Stainless Steel TIG welded Exhaust system. Timmy has featured on the show many times helping us out with wiring and showing off his Datsun products from One Six Industries. He has a couple of cool Dattos and since we were doing some work on this one for him we thought we'd show it off before getting stuck into the job. The Current setup consists of a VQ35 bottom end from a Nissan Elgrand with Wiseco Pistons and Eagle Conrods mated to VQ30 Cylinder Heads with HKS MLS Gaskets, ARP L19 Head studs and VQ35 Kelford Camshafts and Valve Springs. Previously Timmy had fitted a GT3582 (Too small) followed by an BW-S362 (A bit lazy) and it currently has a GTX3584RS (Turbine to restrictive) Timmy's always looking for more and ever-evolving vehicle hence why we're changing
Today on The Skid Factory We're in Sydney at @haltech HQ with Scott aka "Tuning Fork" who gives us a tour of the facility and shows us what goes into making a Haltech ECU.
Today on The Skid Factory Woody and AL check out a Former Project car that was built in the shed nearly 20 Years ago! Sebby's HX Holden one tonner was previously owned by our mate Scott with the Harrop Supercharged Iron Lion Wagon. Al removed the 350 Chev TH350 and converted the ute with a 4.0L 1UZFE from a Toyota Celsior and then later Turbocharged it using a Garrett GT4088, Haltech Sprint 500 and a bunch of other Bits making it a reliable 400HP Weekend Cruiser. Although this car was built nearly 20 years ago Al still uses similar techniques when he's building cars now. Old habits don't die.
In this episode of The Skid Factory we check out the latest upgrades to the JZS171 Crown Wagon and address one of the biggest problems with the platform. Al sold the car to his mate Brad after the exhaust, intercooler and ecu upgrades and since then Brad has had a bunch more work done at Golebys including a highmount turbo, head studs and gasket. It makes good power but getting it to the ground is now an issue with the factory open centre differential. The Internet told us that a diff from a Subaru BRZ / Toyota 86 will "Bolt in" so we sourced one from the local Subaru wrecking yard. The G series diff from the BRZ / 86 is a Torsen Limited Slip Differential and supposedly will bolt into not only the JZS platform but also the XE10 Chassis and possibly others! The "G series" Crown wheel and pinion can be swapped from vehicles like the MX83 Cressida MA70 supra and some models of the Toyota Hilux to change gear ratios but this isn't a simple swap. If you've done this before let us know in
Today on The Skid Factory we're at Summernats 35 with Millsi's Barra Bedford and Al's Big Block Crown! Unfortunately the Crown has suffered some damage to the transmission after a run down Skid Row but we still enjoyed the event nonetheless! Thanks to everyone who stopped and said hi! We love meeting like minded people at events like this!
Today on The Skid Factory We've got Ian's Gen 4 Liberty Wagon in for a few repairs in preparation for SuperCheap Auto Powercruise 91! Making a reliable 500KW from a 2.5L is a pretty epic achievement and it's done via a Closed Deck & Sleeved EJ25 mated with Spec C EJ207 Heads, a Haltech Elite 2500 controls the show and Boost supplied by a Garrett GTX35/84RS.
Today on The Skid Factory We're Repowering the SUPER COX with a Yamaha 450CC Single Cylinder Engine in preparation for this years @supercheapautotv Best Performing Oil's Campaign!
Today On The Skid Factory We're checking out Shayne's Peter Brock VL Calais Sport by HDT and talk about the history of the car and the controversy surrounding the Energy Polarizer. The Holden Dealer Team (HDT) was a racing team in Australia that competed in touring car racing during the 1970s and 1980s. In the mid 80s, HDT became embroiled in controversy over a device called the "Energy Polarizer," which was claimed to improve the performance of HDT cars by aligning and “Polarizing” molecules. There was no scientific evidence to support these claims and executives at Holden rejected it as a legitimate performance product. Holden soon after severed ties with HDT. Brocks legacy is a decade of tuned Commodores that are now valuable collector Cars and Shayne’s VL Calais is a prime example.
On this episode of The Skid Factory we set about modernising an iconic 1980's HDT VL Calais by adding a modern engine management system. We explain in depth what's required to successfully convert a carburettored engine to modern engine management from fuel system to ignition right down to wiring needs and initial startup. The ancient Quadrajet Carburettor is being replaced by multi-port fuel injection and an electronic throttle body from an LSA. The distributor is also swapped out for a VT Commodore crank angle sensor so the Haltech Elite 2500 ECU can have full control over the engine.
On this episode of The Skid Factory we bolt Shaynes HDT VL Calais up to the KFM Hub Dyno so Kye can work his magic with the keyboard. Things don't go to plan along the way so Shayne does some parts replacement while we rejig the trigger system for more accurate control of the ignition system. We return to the dyno and after an NA tune the Nitrous Bottle is cracked open and purged ready for some chemical supercharging. Thanks to Shayne for the opportunity to work on such a Special Australian made vehicle! Shayne is stoked with the outcome and has already put some KM's on the new combo, Stay tuned for some future episodes where we'll get the Brock VL out on the track for some fun!
On this episode of The Skid Factory we crack open Al's failed PowerGlide Transmission to get to the bottom of the failure that occurred at Summernats while doing a burnout.
On this episode of The Skid Factory we tackle the daunting task of splitting, cleaning and rewelding a torque converter. As with many things related to Automatic Transmissions, the converter and it's construction are considered somewhat voodoo and not to be touched. We dive in the deep end in an attempt to both educate ourselves and demystify the process but find out along the way that it is a very time consuming and finicky job and, whilst doable with our skills and equipment, is still probably more practical to have a pro do it, or just buy a bolt together. Thanks to our mate Dave for his legendary skills and advice, Be like Dave, Help out your mates.
Today on The Skid Factory we’re hanging out with The Hoff at @NuggetGarage to tune Timmy’s VQ35 Turbo Datsun Bluebird! Timmy has featured on the show many times helping us out with wiring and showing off his Datsun products from One Six Industries. He has a couple of cool Dattos including this 1981 Datsun Bluebird 910 The Current setup consists of a VQ35 bottom end from a Nissan Elgrand with Weisco Pistons and Eagle Conrods mated to VQ30 Cylinder Heads with HKS MLS Gaskets ARP L19 Head studs, VQ35 Kelford Camshafts and Valve Springs. After playing around with a few different turbo combinations Timmy has settled on a G40-1150 which he’s hoping will provide both response and Top end power.
Gone are the days of getting dirty removing a CV shaft from a vehicle thats stacked ontop of a crushed AU Falcon at your local Rim Wreckers, Today on The Skid Factory We're at an ACM Parts Dismanteller for a behind the scenes look into Modern Age Recycling.
We've been chipping away at a few jobs Including Manualising the Power Steering Rack, Cleaning up the engine bay and filling 2346 Industry Standard holes and expanding the rear tubs to fit a 275/60/15 Radial.
Today on The Skid Factory We're hooking into some intercooler and Exhasust fabrication but first we need to finish assembling the engine and modify the sump to help with oil surge issues on front sumped JZ engines.
Today on The Skid Factory we've got Nathan's Shorty 40 Series back in the shed to fix up a few things that have been on the "To-do" list for quite some time.
Is Toyota's 1GZ-FE V12 a good engine? Can the Rods handle Boost? We've got Nathan's 1978 SWB 40 Series LandCruiser on the dyno at Knight Family Motorsport to tune the newly Wired Haltech Elite 2500 and decide how much power We think is suitable for a Turbocharged Stock Unopened engine. We had already had a false start the week before due to some transfer case issues but with that all sorted we are ready to go. The tuning process on a stock bottom end engine with known strength issues is a little different to a built engine and Kye from KFM talks us through how to get the most power without risking rod breakage.
Just shy of Fraser Island is one of QLD's best 4WD accessible Beaches Noosa Northshore otherwise Known as Teewah Beach which connects Noosa Heads to Rainbow Beach and Double Island Point. Today on The Skid Factory we jump in Nathan's 1GZFE V12 Twin Turbo 40 Series LandCruiser along with our mate Josh in his Mint 1HZ 80 Series and cruise up the beach for a "Day at work" Thanks to Bazza's fishing recovery services and tidal information bureau for the confirmation of the tidal movements.
Plumbing your Project car with A/N Fittings can be a daunting task. Especially when It's a Drag car and you want every fitting to be Serviceable yet leak free. We've used -3 PTFE Teflon lines for Boost Control, -10 200 series PTFE for our mechanical fuel system and -12 & - 16 120 series nylon Braid for the cooling System.
Utilising sensors to obtain maximum data for your drag car is beneficial when it comes to making changes at the track. Wiring Pressure, Temperature and position sensors can be daunting and time consuming so we got some help from the crew at Whiteys Wiring to show us how a Motorsport grade wiring loom is made and what the key differences are between Club level and Pro level wiring. The boys knock out the engine and transmission wiring in teflon coated TXL wire leading to a pair of Deutsch bulkhead connectors ready for us to finish the job inside the car. Once the boys are don we then fit up the remaining sensors required for Kevin's track data in preparation for the rest of the @haltech Nexus R5 wiring to be done.
MotorEx showcases some of Australia's Best Street Machines but what about all the locals with their daily drivers or Sunday Street cars? Today on The Skid Factory Al takes us for a tour of the event as we search for the Most unique engine swap!
Do you own a 1HZ powered 70, 80 or 100 series Toyota Landcruiser and you're thinking about Turbocharging the engine? The smart way is to buy a 1HZ Turbo Kit and bolt it on at home but what if you've got a Subaru Turbo laying around in the shed? Today on The Skid Factory we show you how to turbo your 1HZ and include the important tasks like welding a drain into the sump, replacing the big end bearings and where to get oil pressure for the oil feed! Whilst we completed this job on a "Budget" its possible to do it cheaper by recycling second hand parts or using different materials, If you've got anything to add please comment below and add your opinion!
Matt from Rogan Industries is a regular on the show when highly skilled fabrication work is required. He has been involved in multiple projects fabricating rear axles and doing sheet metal alterations for us. His Father Dave has also been on the show helping us split a converter, clean it and reweld it. Dave is a retired machinist and pro stock racer and him and Matt are Drag Racers to the core. So what sort of weekend car would they have to cruise in? A 9.2 litre 1000hp naturally aspirated 1986 IROC-Z Camaro is the answer. Dave bought the Camaro completely stock in 1987 with very low mileage and it has evolved over 35 years into what you see here today. A true Father/Son project and testament to Matt and Daves Skills.
Grass roots motorsport is alive and well and just as important as ever! In this Episode of The Skid Factory Woody heads to a local hidden race track to check out some budget Gymkhana racing. The Sunshine Coast Motorsport Club hosts a variety of events throughout the year ranging from Hillclimbs to Sprints and Gymkhana events like this one. Timmy's home built Yamaha R6 powered Shifter Kart is a good example of the type of vehicle that can be used in these events. Timmy took a bare 250 Shifter kart chassis and a crashed R6 Bike and used the parts to create his extended wheelbase and track "Death Kart". All done on a tight budget in his home shed. There are Grass Roots Motorsport Clubs in most areas of Australia so if you are keen on some cheap fun and honing your driving skills while meeting like minded people then seek out a Club in your area and get racing!
True Race Cars can be very hard on components, particularly longer forms of racing such as Circuit Racing and Rally. Add Turbocharging and intake restrictors to the mix and things can get even more difficult and break more often. On this episode of The Skid Factory we bring in a fabrication expert from Goleby's Parts and Fabrication to work through fabricating a new turbo manifold for a BMW E30 Improved Production Racecar. We discuss the reasons for failure of the original piece, design changes on the new manifold, material choice and welding processes used. You might be a pretty competent self taught fabricator but there is always something to learn from a pro, so grab a Lemon Squash, sit back and have a watch as Steady shows us how it's done.
It's been a while since Al's Big Block Crown has been out on the road so we headed down to the road trip drag challenge at Willobank raceway and raced the crown down the 1/8th mile.
Today on The Skid Factory we're engine swapping Woody's 1989 Toyota Crown wagon. Although the crown has a unique Chassis design the steps we follow can still be used on any vehicle so if you're thinking about a Barra swap then pay attention!
What kind of Turbo should you buy for your Barra? Your decision can change depending on what kind of car your building but for the most part this Garrett G40-1150 is the perfect match for that 600-1000HP Range "Street Car". Take a look at the differences between the older GT4094 and the new G40. It's Amazing how Far Turbo technology has come, what do you think we'll see next?
Want to know what's inside a Nissan TD42? Why they overheat or how to remove TD42 Injectors? Today on The Skid Factory we make a start on rebuilding the Legendary Nissan TD42 6 cylinder diesel engine. The TD42 was produced from 1988 til 2006 and available in NA and Turbo formats. They were fitted to Nissan's Patrol, Civilian Bus and large forklifts. The most common engine in Australia is the early naturally aspirated "Silvertop" engine which are now commonly fitted to later model patrols that suffer failures of the smaller diesels that are factory fitted. We sourced a high mileage Silvertop with plans to rebuild the engine to turbo specification and fit it to a 2003 Patrol. The engine is stripped down and checked for wear and we run through the design of the engine and it's variations over the years.
Today on The Skid Factory we're re-assembling the TD42 with new parts that bring it to Factory Turbo Spec and show some key differences between the two engines including the pistons, Oil squirters and cylinder head.
A Harrop Supercharged 454 Big Block Chev that makes 700+ Horsepower isn't breaking any records when it comes to fuel economy but when it sucks 37l of ethanol per 100KM (6.3MPG in freedom units) it hurts the wallet when you want to go for a Sunday cruise.
Jamboree attracts some of the fastest cars in Australia. Billet V8's, Crazy HP 2JZ's, Barras, RB's & INSANE Rotaries are some of the combinations you'll see within pit lane. But it hasn't always been like that. Jamboree was started in 1991 by a VW club to fill a void in the small car scene, The event slowly transformed into a 4 cylinder, rotary and sports compact drag racing event but as the years went on the cars became quicker and larger 6 cylinder and v8 combinations combos started racing. Jamboree is now one of the largest drag racing events in Australia that hosts some of the best built cars from interstate to showcase Sports compact racing at its best.
On the weekend of our local swap meet we decide to head down and see if there are still bargains to be found at these traditional trading places for car parts. Has Marketplace relegated these events to the past for good or are their still hidden gems to be found? Let’s find out.
With the Barra and TH400 mounted in Woody's Crown Wagon it's time to turn our attention to the all important support systems of fuel and electronics. The fuel system is handled by the Raceworks catalogue starting with a surge tank that fits in the available space at the rear of the car. Some custom mounting and modification to the existing fuel tank outlet allows Raceworks 200 series PTFE AN lines and fittings to be used throughout. Up front the Barra is being fed fuel via a Raceworks fuel rail and 1500cc injectors and the pressure is regulated by a GFB FXD AN8 fuel pressure reg. Al then gets stuck into one of his favourite tasks, wiring the ecu. In this case he is wiring both a VCU and PDM in the form of the Haltech Nexus R3 VCU and a Haltech PD16 PDM. This new generation of Haltech products allows much greater flexibility in powering high demand pumps and motors and also control over the engine itself all from the same software interface. Woody also tackles some creature comforts
Want to know the Secrets to upgrade your Barra? Follow this Parts guide! While the FG turbo engine is the most capable Barra built, in standard form it will still need some modifications to make more horsepower and be reliable. Today on The Skid Factory We'll run you through what parts are required and how to install them on your factory turbo FG Falcon Engine.
We were asked to build a racecar driver transport vehicle that can hold 6 people so we went out and bought this 2001 Club Car Golf Buggy that needed some loving and fitted it out with a bunch of goodies from Supercheap Auto.
A beautiful lump of Barra horsepower deserves a respectful engine bay and Woody's Crown wagon is looking a bit abused. Today on The Skid Factory we're painting the engine bay and finalising the last few time consuming jobs so that we can power up the Haltech Nexus R3 and hit kit for a first start!
Supercheap Auto treats us to an epic action packed ad every year to promote their "Best Performing Oil" brands. It's always a great watch but sometimes the things you don't see can be as interesting as the final product. The making of an ad of this calibre has a massive crew behind it and in this episode we take you behind the scenes to see how it's done, who does it and what each persons role in the production entails. This production is a modern blend of old school production techniques with the help of some new school drone filmography to capture the moments perfectly.
With a Stout Barra up front and the ever ready TH400 trans backing it up, the next in line for the powertrain is a big tailshaft and strong rear axle and differential. In this episode Matt from Rogan Industries takes the reigns to fabricate a triangulated four link 9" rear axle complete with 35 spline Race Products Floating hubs and a Harrop Eaton True Trac diff centre for the ultimate rear end setup. Connecting the TH400 to the new diff is a GJ Drivelines cromoly single piece shaft. The wagon is a big unit, with a full chassis and all the luxuries it's going to tip the scales close to 2000 kg so a good set of brakes is required to pull it up safely. Hopper Stoppers supplied a full front brake setup to match the rear FG falcon brakes. Hoppers Stoppers billet 4 piston front calipers are made right here in Australia and matched to a 300mm Falcon rotor they provide incredible stopping power while still fitting under a traditional 15" wheel.
Its easy to hate on ZD30's but reality is a 3.0L diesel isn't big enough for a Nissan Patrol. Take your Isuzu 4JJ1, BMW M57 or Mercedes OM606 ideas somewhere else because the best engine for a Patrol is a well setup TD42. We're not here to make 300hp and snap cranks, Gus wants a reliable daily/tourer so a GTX28/63 matched with an All States Diesel 11mm Injector pump will provide a great combination of torque and fuel efficiency and keep the patrol moving for years to come!
With a Fully Rebuilt TD42 fed by an All States Diesel 11MM Injector pump and GTX28/63 this patrol will be almost unstoppable but not without the help from our mates at @DobinsonsSuspension, @HarropTV & @supercheapautotv
Can you make a Barra sound good? With its large capacity and long stroke the Barra has a very unique sound. With some help from Golebys Parts we are going to give our best shit at fabricating a practical yet ear pleasing exhaust for Woody's Crown Wagon using 3.5" Stainless Steel mandrel bends and Vibrant mufflers. With the tail shaft fitted and exhaust fabricated it's then off to see our mate Kye at Knight Family Motorsport. With the laptop connected to the Haltech Nexus R3 its time to tune this bad boy and get ready to hit the streets!
Woody's 600+HP Barra converted JDM Sleeper wagon has been a dream build for over 5 years and over the last 4 months has undergone a huge transformation. We've compiled all of the footage and condensed the episodes into one MASSIVE episode. Going back through the episodes gives you an idea of how much effort went into this project and it wouldn't have been possible without the help of our legendary mates and epic companies that support the show.
TD42's are a legendary diesel engine powering Buses, 4wds and Forklifts across the globe. They aren't without their problems though. One of the key ways to keep your TD42 reliable and cool is to select the right injection pump and tune it correctly. In this episode we take our freshly built TD42 turbo engine to Evolution Tuning to get the fuelling and injection timing calibrated for a clean running, powerful and economical TD42. Yes it is possible. This specific combination consists of a Factory spec Turbo TD42, All States Diesel 11MM Injector Pump, GT28/63 Turbocharger and a Plazmaman Water to air intercooler.
Millenium Jade is up there with one of the best OEM colours, Combined with a unique chassis and the Legendary Toyota 2JZGTE this Laurel is one special vehicle! Matt has been piecing this build together over the last 3 years and its finally time to get it running so we've helped him out to get it up and running with a Haltech Elite 2500 and PD16 PDM.
Woody bought this Neat VG30 Twin Turbo Z32 300zx in November 2018 as a surprise for Al. With a Melted VG30DETT and clean paint this was a perfect donor for a stupid engine conversion. Originally Al went down the path of bolting on a pair of G25-900's to a Nissan VH41DE 4.1L Alloy V8 but as the months went past lost interest in the project due to the complexity of the build. A few engine conversion ideas were floated around including a DCT backed Honda K24, Turbo VW VR6 or even just a stout VG30 but in the end Alan landed on the path of building a RB25/30. With the help from some epic companies like@haltechHaltech, Go Fast Bits, Raceworks, Golebys Parts and Supercheap Auto this vision is coming to life and AL's Dream 300ZX will soon be a reality!
Nissan RB25/30, RB30/25, RB26/30, RB30DET - Whatever you call it, It's the same thing. BUT this engine can be built many different ways using various cylinder heads.
With a freshly built RB25/30 and a clean Z32 donor car were ready to mount the engine and RB26 5 speed! While were at we tick a few jobs off the list including fitting a set of coilovers from our mate Don at TMI racing products and paint and fit the Sumitomo brake calipers with some upgraded R32 GTR rotors.
