Il colonnello Steve Austin, a causa di un incidente durante una missione, perde le gambe, il braccio destro e l'occhio sinistro. Su di lui viene effettuata una ricostruzione bionica all'avanguardia, che sostituisce gli organi danneggiati con arti bionici. La serie prende il titolo dal costo dell'intervento, appunto di sei milioni di dollari. Na história, Steve Austin é astronauta que sofre um acidente enquanto testa um novo modelo de avião. Gravemente ferido, ele é levado à sala de cirurgia onde é submetido a uma operação que substitui seu olho e braço direito, bem como as duas pernas, por partes biônicas. Seus novos membros lhe dão a capacidade de enxergar a longas distâncias, bem como uma visão infravermelha, além de ser capaz de correr em alta velocidade.
